Prefer the Garmin but the TomTom VIA is also pretty good.

You need to provide more info. You looking for an automotive GPS or a handheld GPS? What features do you need? Any 2 models in particular you are looking to compare?

I've been a Garmin GPS user since 2001 so it's the brand I prefer. It could be I'm just so familiar with the UI, but when I use a Tom Tom unit, I feel like it's less user friendly than the Garmin.

My first GPS was a Tom Tom.

The maps were poor - they did not have my house, which has been here since 1979. Tinkering with it, I lost track of where I was, and got stopped for speeding for the first time in almost 10 years.

I returned it and got a Garmin. Now, my only problem is non-replaceable batteries. (I think they're a subsidiary of Apple.)

TomTom. They at least have user updates to the maps to correct things. Users can also update speed limits etc. Only Google maps is updated better/faster.

Garmin, you have to wait for the mappers (NavTec mostly) to fix things. Yeah. Been waiting 10 years for this road to get on the maps. Can't get here from anywhere because it doesn't exist.

Just MHO.

I like TomTom. Every time I've bought a GPS (a grand total of two times) I've compared TomTom and Garmin, and when comparing similar models the TomTom has had a better price point.

Last time I waited for a sale. The TomTom with lifetime maps was the same price as the regular TomTom. So now I can update it whenever I want.

With the help of my garmin, i visited various ghettos across the midwest. I swear that thing tried to kill me. Downtown to dupage county? Take a detour through humbolt park late at night. Sure.. Why not..

Well not exactly:
"*You receive up to four non-transferable map data updates per year until the product's useful life expires or TomTom no longer receives map updates from its suppliers, whichever is shorter. Details and terms at www.tomtom.com/legal."

It all depends on what the definition of life time is. I am fairly sure that my definition is different than their definition.

I bought a Garmin NUVI 200 back in early 2008 and it is a nice entry level GPS.

Map updates are about 60 bux a year unless one torrents them in which case they cost much less

It does not speak street names though which is pretty important.

it was 242 bux.

About a year and a half ago I got my wife an entry level Tom Tom for 98 bux with free lifetime map updates.
It speaks street names and shows if you are speeding etc.

I liked it so much I bought one for my MIL as well.

Here's a list of the best selling GPS units based on sales, not necessarily features, etc. I'm not equating best selling to "best" but just another data point to reference...

I have 2 Garmin's, and prefer them. A 3790LMT, and a 775T with LM.

Both brands are good, as long as you keep to the middle price point or higher. But, that goes for all electronics for the most point, right?

Whatever you buy, enjoy! You'll never go back to paper again.

I know you weren't asking about Magellans, but I've liked those the best. I've had 3 of them.

Mostly I really like the user interface on them.

Nuther vote on the Magellan.. duno what it cost, got it from reward points.. really like the menus, easy to use. dont use the voice thing tho, so i have no opinion there

I`d say spend 5mins messing with each brand at yer fav store.. get a feel of the menus

We had a tomtom but over the past two years the wife and I just use our smartphones to find our way. Haven't had any issues.

Neither.

They both suck as of the last time I used them... And I used them extensively.

Having owned both I think I prefer the Tom-Toms. "Life-time" maps and some other features (such as different voices ie Yoda) made it 'fun'.

My brother who works for the local PD says that Garmins get stolen a lot more than the Tom-toms. Not sure why though.

BTW, you can replace a Garmin battery no problem.
