[Availability] DSL service not available in Irvine CA?

I'm moving into a new house in Irvine (zip 92620). It's a new construction. ATT will setup the new landline phone service by the end of this week. However, they told me DSL service is not available. How can I tell if it's really not available or the rep doesn't know what he's doing?

Thanks!

Go to the AT&T.com website. Make sure you click the Personal tab in the top left corner. Click on Shop and then Internet. Ignore the Uverse Splash advertisement that comes up. Go to the bottom of that page and click on the DSL with home phone link inside the box. The link should be the second one down in the left column marked Internet. You will get a check availability page. Input zip code. There is more after that, but it is fairly easy.

It says it doesn't recognize the number as an ATT landline number. Is it because the service is not setup yet?

Irvine is a "green lawn" community for a large portion, and many of the local HOA's have refused AT&T to install the VRAD units required for U-Verse deployment due to the size of the cabinets and them distracting from their beautifully manicured lawns and sidewalks.

Since this is a new construction, it is very well possible that they (AT&T) have decided not to implement new DSL equipment if at some point they do get permission to install VRAD units for U-verse. Currently they are not expanding DSL at all, and U-Verse only in new builds like yours. But if the local HOA's are stubborn, I don't know.... there is a good chance you'll have to go with cable for internet and that the rep is right.

Irvine is virtually surrounded by U-Verse, but not in many parts of Irvine itself. A friend of mine lives in middle of Irvine, and can get DSL, but not U-Verse. This is for the reason mentioned above, the HOA's are very powerful in Irvine and have the right to refuse AT&T from building stuff on their property. Cellular coverage is pretty shotty too in Irvine because it's hard to place masts in the right spots for the same stubborn HOA reasons.

I believe that area is served by Cox, and they offer pretty good internet options if I recall.

Most likely. Its also just a database, and databases aren't always updated on the fly. You should still be able to determine service with the exact address though.

A frequent issue with new construction is that, since we have never provided service to that address, we don't know the distance between your location and the central office.

In these cases, we have to wait for the telephone service to be installed and working before availability of service can be determined.

It's also possible that it's just not offered in your area.

If you want, email me at mn970q@att.com and include your address and residential telephone number, and I can tell you which is the case.
