My new toy

No idea if everything works, but the display shows all of the characters on power-up and nothing looks burned inside. Since I didn't pay anywhere close to what the price in the ad is, I will not go bankrupt if it turns out to be uneconomical to repair. I have no way to test the IEEE-488 port, but I don't need this anyway; as long as I can program the supply from the front panel, I am good to go.

This thing is definitely a monster; I would have preferred something smaller, but, when you scrounge around at surplus stores, you take whatever they have.

Update- I was able to get an old car headlight to light on both outputs, so it appears there is hope.

Keyboard settable supplies are not a good match for r/d, since it is not easy to gently ramp up and turn down when bad things happen.

There is an output disable pushbutton which will instantly turn off the voltage that is being applied to the load. You can also program in a current limit, which will (hopefully) keep the load current from exceeding a safe level during a fault condition.

I agree that a potentiometer or rotary encoder may be better, but, it is difficult/impossible to find the perfect power supply at a reasonable price in the used market, so I went with what I found. Later, if something better comes along, I can put this one up for sale on Craigslist.

There are many options that are reasonably priced...

Most of those are low current linear reg chinese crap.
Often have a relay switched ranges to keep from melting.
Anybody with basic skills should be able to construct a much better supply.

Yes, few (if any) of those power supplies on Amazon are up to HP's level of quality/reliability/performance.

A good cutoff for power supplies is a handful of cables, yanked hard and fast.
