Nexus 7 (Google's $199 Tablet)

quote:
Google Nexus 7

Today, during Google's keynote at Google I/O 2012, the company announced a new Asus-branded tablet called the Nexus 7.

The Nexus 7 sports a 7-inch, IPS (in-plane switching) screen, with a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels. The tablet is also the first 7-incher to house a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU.

Rounding out the specs is a Micro-USB port, 1GB of RAM, a 1.2-megapixel front camera (no back camera included), a gyroscope, GPS, accelerometer, microphone, and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The device measures 10.45mm thick, weighs 0.7 pound, and, from the looks of the first pictures released, has a textured, grippy backside and looks to be about the same size as the Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 will be the first device to run the latest version of the Android 4.1 OS, also known as Jelly Bean. Google says to expect 9 hours of 720p HD video battery life

I think, if you leave the low end of the market to your competition, eventually, they'll upsell to larger and more pricey products. Will a Nexus 7 user graduate to, presumably, a Nexus 8 (instead of iPad) when they have greater means?
Many have gotten wiped out by betting against Apple, I'm certainly not interested in doing so, but I think the people in low end of the market wont stay there forever ... just ask Toyota.

The question is if Apple releases a 7" iPad in the next few months will this thing even have a chance? Apple may be targeting a very similar price point and will undoubtably take up enough of the market to prevent this thing from becoming the "de facto" tablet.

If that's the case wouldn't they have previewed it at WWDC

I think it part it has to do with price, performance and integration.
If I had a Iphone and a Mac, it would be natural assumption that I would buy an Ipad. That way synching across all the devices would be simple and easy.

Same with Android/chrome. You'd think that if I had a Chromebook, an Android phone, I'd lean towards an Android type pad device. Again because synching would be so much easier.

The same with Microsoft. If I owned a windows phone, a windows PC, then a windows based tablet should be the way I go. All because keeping things synched would be easier.

*This is what I think the experience would be like. I only own an Ipad and have a windows based PC as well as a linux based PC.

I pretty much agree -- I mean, I wanted an iPad because I already had an iPhone (and I'm not switching to any other phone so...)

However, if the price is right, I could see the gadget hounds (like myself) getting one just to "try"...

Nope. Apple will probably announce it with either immediate availability or only a short time to availability if the rumors are true. Since it will supposedly have the same resolution as the current iPad 2 apps won't have to be re-written to run on it.

Google Nexus 7, Nexus Q First Impressions
JUNE 27, 2012 AT 8:33 PM PT

Every year at Google I/O, there’s an Oprah moment where Google showers conference attendees with free gifts, usually the latest Android phone or tablet. Previous giveaways have included the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the HTC Evo 4G and the Nexus One.
This year attendees are being treated to the new Nexus 7 tablet, Nexus Q and the Galaxy Nexus. Sadly, Google Glass was not part of the swag bag.
AllThingsD will be reviewing the Nexus 7 and Nexus Q soon, but I was anxious to get my hands on the new devices, so I dug into the goodie bag like a kid at Christmas. Here are a few of my first impressions on Google’s latest gear.
When I first opened the Nexus 7 tablet, I felt a sense of deja vu. The design of the tablet reminded me a lot of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, with its beveled edges and gray chassis. But the Nexus 7 isn’t a Samsung product, it’s made by Asus and there are some major differences between it and its main competitor, the Amazon Kindle Fire...

Of course they do. They'll eventually saturate the market and the prices will be driven down to commodity levels. These are two things they worry about.

Apple never really caved on their computer prices that I can remember. Their mantra always has been to provide cheap software on expensive good quality hardware ...
Google will someday tire of subsidizing hardware in hopes of buying a "market" that Apple obviously already owns.

Except no one wants a Windows phone so the only thing going there is the desktop. But Google's software is web based, and most people use tablets just for web stuff so Google software runs everywhere, including Windows and Macs.

Honestly I think ASUS and Google have really done an excellent job here with the Nexus 7. The combination of a quad core SoC, IPS panel, solid construction, and the latest version of Android all for such a killer price point pretty much make it hard to really find any faults.

That is what they said about the Kindle Fire. The only time I see anyone taking those home is in the form of door prize for donating blood or something...
