[Connectivity] July 3 drop dead date

I can't get a straight answer from SL. I'm old enough to appreciate "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Received a phone call from the local office saying I need to bring their model back for an upgrade. I own the cable modem, an older Linksys DOCSIS 1.0 which works OK, 3.5 Mbps down on the 10 Mbps plan. A call to tech first says same thing, then changes their mind and I'm OK. An email with all the particulars comes back as must upgrade and by the way did you know you can .. It seems SL supplies an Arris modem - they all seem to be telephony modems, so if this just a sales gimmic or is something happening that will void my current connection? Can't see any wisdom in upgrading for a potential speed upgrade when most demanding app is Netflix.

I don't know modems Suddenlink leases out, but Arris does make plenty of non-EMTA modems:

I'm amazed you're able to connect with a DOCSIS 1.0 modem at all. At least find a cheap Moto SB5101/5120 (DOCSIS 2.0) on Craigslist and get the speeds you pay for, it shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks.

Agreed, Doc 1 support is likely being eliminated or something is changing that won't allow your doc1 modem to connect. So it's very possible that you do HAVE to upgrade your modem to keep online.

The part that is not set in stone is that you don't have to use their supplied modems. Nor do you need a telephony modem. Though you can't blame them for attempting an up sale. They are a business after all.

July 3 came and went & then the snail mail notice with a July 16 deadline. Local office couldn't wrap their heads around me owning my own cable modem. I replaced my old Linksys with a SB6121, phoned in the MAC & they had me back up in no time. No change in the speed tests pre and post. I'm on 10/1. Speedtest.net returns 11/1. The Flash tool on this site from Tx to IL via Sprint always is much lower. I presume this is normal ? Tech informs me Suddenlink will bump the 10/1 plan to 15/1 on July 25th.
