My point is retail sales is retail sales. These guys aren't engineers, they're highschool educated kids in blue shirts, "selling" stuff to people who want to buy it.
Expecting them to make radically different pay than other retail sales droids, or McDonald's employees, just because the crap they sell happens to be Apple crap, is just silly.
If you don't like the pay in retail sales, get out of retail sales.

The market for good retail employees is vast. If an Apple store employee moves on because of the low pay, there are many others waiting in line for the job who will in all likely hood perform adequately for the job.
What you said definitely applies to the Cupertino jobs, the engineers, programmers, designers, management. Those skills are a rarer commodity.

Huh...actually looking at the classifieds and comparing my real life experience, it seems as though engineers, programmers, designers, and management are in plentiful supply. Actual good sales employees are a very rare find though.
You are correct in that there is a huge supply pool for people who can work in sales. Successful salesmen are a different commodity though. |

Apple Retail is a shit hole.
Mike's right you know. I was very successful at retail sales working at a high end electronics store on commission. I consistently brought in between 60-70k a year, wore very nice clothes, and drove a Bimmer 5 series. This was all done over 20 years ago.
I very well might still be doing it today if wasn't for Wal*mart, Best Buy, and internet sales changing the way industry operated.

The problem is, when you talk to someone about sales today, they picture the nameless person who gets the item you want out from the back. (Good) Sales used to be a lot more than occupying floor real estate & bad talking point regurgitation.
In today's market, a "good" salesperson is someone who speaks English and doesn't get in the way of the product you came to buy. |
