MS/Windows Update today?

I got a new MS/Windows Update today in my updated XP Pro. SP3 and 64-bit W7 HPE machines.

Microsoft releases security updates on the second Tuesday of every month and Windows Update releases non-security updates on the fourth Tuesday of every month

It was an ActiveX control for MS/Windows Updates in XP. Windows Update Agent v7.6.7600.256 for 64-bit W7 HPE. I assume they're related to each other.

I am aware of that. Hence, why I checked today.

I did not get that today, but I already had the update for Windows Update Agent, so that is probably why I did not get that. I checked Windows Update using IE8 in XP SP3 and got no updates, either critical or optional.

Interesting. I wonder if this is a random update for some users.

Interesting you would mention this, antdude.
I run Microsoft/Windows update manually (on 'patch Tues', and also just for the heck of it sometimes when I'm bored).
At any rate, yes, my Microsoft Update updated to a new version of Microsoft Update. (Weird, eh? Updating yourself so you can continue updating?) lol.
Today was the first time I ran it at all since June 'patch Tues' (yeah, one of those 'bored' times), and both my XP and Win7 machines decided it was time for an update. (Haven't played around with the Vista Laptop since Patch Tues, but if I run it, I expect the same thing to happen.
Sorry for the long winded post....just an update for your benefit.
Oops...update! I just read the other thread, which I should have done to begin with. Oh well. Now we're all updated on the threads, as well as the updates on the updated updater, as far as I can tell.
Aw...never mind.

I just ran mine and got no updates. XP Pro, SP3, IE 8. I check every Wednesday, just in case I miss something on a Tuesday. I won't check tomorrow as I am sure that there won't be one tomorrow.

As I recall, the rollout of the Windows Update Agent update was supposed to be staggered so that everyone did not get it at the same time. Other than that, I know only that on the three Win 7 Pro 64-bit systems I check regularly, none needed any update today. All have the Windows Update Agent update installed, already.

Weird that WUA still has to be installed after rebooting W7. I had to safe mode and it told me update failed. Lame.

That is weird. It sounds like something unique to your system. Did it finally get installed successfully? Was there anything in the event logs that would give a clue as to what happened? That's sort of rhetorical, because I find lots of things that fail and the event logs don't show any reason and often not even an entry.

Yeah, it was installed according to WU and its history. I hope it didn't break.
