Riding Toro 8-32 Professional running issue

I have a riding mower that will start and run okay until you attempt to put it in gear or engage the blade. The problem seems to be the safety system.

If the blade is not disengaged and the handle pressing the switch the mower will not start. But if I disengage it and start the mower I can move the lever toward engaging just to the point of releasing the safety switch and the mower dies as if the key were turned off.

I removed the ignition switch and cleaned it up thinking that maybe the terminals were somehow grounded by the crud... but that did not help.

I could bypass the blade safety switch, but the mower does the same thing when I try ti put it in gear... that seems like it would be more difficult to bypass.

Since the safety "kill switching" seems to work for the starting position... but does not allow the mowere to run when in the running position either... would replacing the ignition switch be a good place to start?

Can you tell me what terminals should and should not show connecting when the switch is in each position? I have a multi tester but no idea how to verify that the switch is failing.

Thanks
Keith

Sounds like it is elsewhere. The safety switch on the blades enables the others.

Most likely the seat sensor is shorted or became unplugged (some plugs will short themselves when disconnected.)

I checked that... and it seems normal...

By dumb luck I laid across the seat to have my hands where I could hold the blade switch with my hand and work the gear shift.

The mower continued to run and ran fine until it ran out of gas. I then laid across the seat and was able to get it going again. So it for sure seems to have issue with the seat switch. The problem is that if it does not sense me on the seat why does it start?

Next is the transmission switch. It dies like a kill switch in first gear, but will run in second or higher.

The transmission safety switch seems to be on the inside. Is it as hard to replace as it looks like? Does the entire transmission have to be changed?

Thanks,
Keith

Many mowers will start with out the seat interlock.

There are two circuits. One breaks the starter solenoid, the other kills the ignition.

The start one usually prevents starting with the deck engaged and without the clutch pressed.

The kill can vary. On Murrays, the seat switch kills the engine anytime. Others only when the deck is engaged.

I have only seen a transmission interlock on a Exmark. The switch scewed in and was easily replaceable. It ran to a box that only allowed starting in neutral. The switch is closed in gear, but if it was started in neutral, it was ignored by the box.
