....

If they're not going to force you to pay the $7 fee, then what's the problem here?

How many customers are really providing their own modems in the first place?

Also I wasn't aware that any cable company provided standalone VoIP. Considering it's voice over internet protocol, doesn't that pretty much require it to have internet access in the first place?

because those of us that went out and own modems will possibly have price increases.

I am to avoid the $7 fee. $7 a month is $84 a year. For that much you can buy a modem that should last say 5 or 6 years or more. That's a savings of hundreds of $$$$$. Or it WAS.

HUGE difference between a pricing increase and having to watch something in the same room you recorded it in which last time I checked cost you NOTHING.

Cable "VoIP" != regular VoIP. Normally, VoIP runs over the public internet, hence the reason it's highly dependent on your last-mile ISP quality and the ISP's backbone routing practices... cable VoIP runs on a private network between the eMTA device on the customer side, and the head-end and cable provider's backbone. Also, as far as I know, it runs on its own dedicated channel on the neighborhood cable loop, not over the DOCSIS system (i.e. it's completely independent of having a cable internet connection).

Not generally. The voice portion is encoded as MGCP or SIP and sent via IP over DOCSIS. It is given a higher prioritization over the customer Internet portion ensure consistent quality of service but it is not typically given it's own QAM carrier.

I assume you meant RTP not SIP?

Nope. The eMTAs are either using an MGCP (Media Gateway Contol Protocol)-also known as "Packetcable"- or SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for signalling of voice services

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_In···Protocol
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGCP

Both MGCP and SIP use RTP (Real Time Protocol) for the media streams

Re: ....

Yes, but that wasn't what you said in the post I was replying to. You said "The voice portion is encoded as MGCP or SIP and sent via IP over DOCSIS", but I'd guess 99% of the people reading your post would confuse this with SIP packets sent on port 5060, which is not how RTP works. You know that (I'm assuming) but most readers won't.

Ah fair point...I was describing the "voice portion" generally in order to differentiate it from the "data or Internet" portion of the subscriber service rather than trying to describe the call setup and signalling versus the voice content part of the VoIP stream.

you are correct that the call signalling and setup is MGCP or SIP and once the call is configured, the voice portion of the call is an RTP stream

Thanks for helping me clarify

·Charter
Every single Charter customer I know, upwards of 40 people, use their own modems.

When I did lease Charter modems I consistently had problems with them although that was about 10 years ago. Since then I got 10 years out of two ~$60/each modems for a total modem price of
$1/month and one of those modems still works fine but is Docsis 2.0.

I just upgraded my modem to accommodate their maximum speeds for another $90.

So in short you are looking at $7/month to lease a substandard modem vs. $1/month to own a high quality modem of your choosing.
