[Other] Callcentric iPhone app - how is it supposed to work?

I have Callcentric and tried the iphone app. However, I am not sure how it is supposed to work. It states that I can enter any phone number as "my number". However, the only way I can get it to work is by providing my cell number. It then calls my cell phone number first. In fact I have to answer on my cell phone the call. Then it would dial the desired number.
Not as I expected.

What you are describing is, I believe, exactly how the iPhone App is intended to work. See here:

Are you saying that you have entered the number of another phone under your control (such as a landline or VoIP phone) in the "my number" field, but that the app does not place a callback call to that other phone?

yes, it will call that other number. But of course, one would need to answer there. I don't see how this would be useful.
This app seems to work like a good old fashioned callback service. Not really taking advantage of the idea to use WiFi or the phone data plan.

Are there "real" SIP phone apps that work with Calcentric?

thanks!

I think I am going to try Acrobits. Seems to be the cheapest option.

There is a long thread in this forum from a while back discussing the merits/demerits of the CC App.

Downshot: CC was not attempting to duplicate existing SIP/Wifi apps. Their intent was to allow cellphone users to make calls, via callback, from their mobiles (via traditional cellular calling, not via data) using cheaper CC VoIP rates, rather than the possibly/likely more expensive rates of the cellular carrier.

So, it's doing what it is designed to do, which some folks like and others don't.

As the website says: you can use it when you don't have WiFi.

(You can also use it more reliably when your 3G data is "iffy).

Fair enough. I bought Acrobits in the meantime. Now I have two tools for any situation.

Didn't get Acrobits to work. Logged a ticket with Callcentric. I can register - icon turn to green. But not place calls. I switched on the SIP log and there are some errors like UDP select.
