This Computer's local hostname ... is already in use

Hi all,

Sometimes when I wake the Mac mini from sleep it displays the message: "This Computer's local hostname ... is already in use".

I've searched the net and found quite a few posts about this issue.

But no one had a definitive answer to what is causing the error and subsequently there are various solutions to the issue.

Only the mini running 10.7.4 has this issue.
The MBP running Snow Leopard is fine.

Does anyone of you guys know how to fix this ?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

regards,

TA

Before a computer joins a network it checks to see if it's host name and ip address are unique
Find out the host names of all the other devices

@Mike

The Mac mini's local hostname is 'My Mac mini'. It is a unique name on the network.

All clients are connected wirelessly. The AEBS is using WPA2 with a strong password. It is running DHCP but with reserved IP addresses for each client.

@wayjac
All devices have unique host names and IP addresses.

Bring up a terminal and see what response you get from the hostname command.

In my case:
Bob$ hostname
Roberts-iMac.local

man hostname (again at the terminal) tells you what this command does.

Bob

I get:

My-Mac-mini:~ alex$

Edit and this: My-Mac-mini.local

This is simply diagnostic, makes no sense, but worth a shot.

Disconnect everything from the network except your mini. Including any IPTV, IP phones, smart phones etc.

Reboot the router.

Add a device one at a time until something bad happens.

Also.. what is your router? What firmware is it running?

Okay I followed the steps you suggested.

And it seems the issue is resolved.
No more "hostname is already in use" messages.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I also reset and reconfigured the router and now it works.
Don't ask me why

I set IPv6 to link-local only on the mini because that's the way it is configured on the router.
Don't know if that adds anything..

My router is an Apple AirPort Extreme running the latest firmware 7.6.1.

Thanks again for all the help guys!
