Madera, CA | [Speed] Firefox extension for speed test. How accurate is the speed tests that you get from the Firefox extension?

| It's very inconsistent here. Run it a bunch of times and it will sometimes get my normal powerboost speed for download, but it never seems to measure more than half of my normal upload speed. |

The speed differs randomly. When I first ran it I got around 80% of my download speed, but during second time I got only half of the previous download speed. When I ran it for the fourth time I got an intermediate speed between the first two download speeds. My download speed differs a lot each and every time. But my upload speed is almost the same (varies within 30 kbps). When I check with speedtest.net my download speed is slightly higher than this add-on test, but my upload speed is way higher (almost five times more). Does anyone have any idea why my speed differs a lot in this add-on speed test? |

Because that is one of the most inaccurate sites there is, as are ALL flash based speed tests! Always take ANY speed test with a grain of salt.
Have to say the same thing to OP. Always take a speed test with a grain of salt, especially one using some stupid extension, unless you're actually downloading something of decent size straight from a site.

Actually you can’t judge on the accuracy of the speed tester unless you are an expert. As a matter of fact the speed of an internet connection itself is bound to be inconsistent most of the time due to a variety of reasons. So how can you judge the accuracy of the speed tester?
If there is an extreme difference, then you may consider it to be bad. But as long as the speed tester is in coincidence with your internet speed it is fair. Being a Firefox product, I think the tool that you are using is pretty good. |

That's not 100% true. Flash based speed tests are dependent on a number of things: CPU speed and how they are coded.
I have an old laptop and I've found speedtest.net to be highly accurate as it barely tasks my CPU and it matches what my bandwidth meter reports. On the other hand the Flash speed tests at DSLReports are highly inaccurate as they are poorly coded and max out my CPU usage.
If you are looking for a speed test that doesn't use flash, you can try »testmy.net/ but I've found that that site under reports speeds.

Once you get past the packet loss error it's the 2 "Shaping rate:" lines that tell you your non-powerboost speed.
So the "estimated capacity" is the speed with powerboost, The "shaping rate:" is the speed without. |

The only problem is that Comcast seems to report the powerboost speed, not the baseline speed. For me, powerboost starts decaying after a few seconds and I'm usually down to my tier speed within 30 seconds or so. |

Most speed tests report the powerboost speeds since the regular speed kicks in after the test ends.

Speedtest.net starts out at 75+, but decays to the rated speed by the end of the test. |
