I hope Apple gets dinged big time for this.
I don't know, it is a pretty thorny legal issue for Apple. Participating in the export of restricted goods is a Federal offense (just ask Phil Zimmerman of PGP who was the target of a Federal investigation for years).
The question to be answered is why was the sale restricted? Either it was
1.) Based on the racist assumption that a Farsi-speaking Iranian will definitely illegally export restricted goods
OR
2.) An Iranian citizen who is here on a tourist or student visa will EVENTUALLY return to Iran. If the Apple employee had some reason to believe that she would return to Iran with the iPad, Apple is in the clear. All it would take is for the woman to say "I am so excited about getting this iPad, I would never have been able to buy one in Tehran!" and it is game over.
I am betting on #2. Considering that Steve Jobs himself was part middle-eastern, it would be a stretch to say that Apple has a racist corporate mandate against middle-easterners...

Stores can't be agents of the government when it comes to that. Besides, this is a freakin iPad.

In fact, Steve Jobs didn't like his father and refused to speak with him. So, if we are going to use Steve Jobs' personal life as the determination of Apple corporate policy, it'd be more likely the company is racist than otherwise.

You had me until you said "their corporate policy".
The company or entrusted representatives of said company define the policy. The policy is in some way a reflection of the company and how they choose to do business. Store policy doesn’t supersede US law so there may be a bigger issue at play but an Apple store isn’t necessarily the best first place to deal with such a law if applicable.
It would be better IMO for Apple to simply hand over information about all customers and let the government deal with it,…which doesn’t make much sense either,...its too invasive.
This should be more of a customs issue. Deal with it as the attempt is made to leave for or enter said country not at the point of sale. |

Yeah, after years of court battles and hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. I think it is entirely reasonable for the Apple employee in question here to NOT want to go through that.
