Any recommendations from Sprint's current line-up?

Soooo...I dropped my EVO yesterday, right on the corner and shattered the screen. (spare me the "this is what cases are for" comments)

It's about time I get a new phone, I'm up for the $150 credit, and they'll buy this one back for $60 (not great, but better than nothing and dealing with fixing / selling it on my own)

So, anyway, anyone have any thoughts on sprints current line up?

Thinking of just going to the new EVO LTE, but wanted to see what you guys thought....

Not sure if the link will work, but here is their listing:

»shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/ph···:520x300

Info about me...heavy user, love Android, and have honestly loved the EVO, aside from it's battery life problems. Never had an issue with it, but wouldn't mind getting something a little newer. I use it for everything. Browsing, personal / work email, nav, camera, music, calendar, reminders, games, the whole shabang.

:edit: Link to the CNET review on the EVO LTE:

You don't want the new GS3?

I honestly don't keep to up-to-date in the cell phone arena...once I have one I'm happy with, I don't really much about new stuff.

I will mark you down as a recommendation of the GS3 then.

I think I've heard complaints about the TouchWiz or whatever on them...I am assuming TouchWiz is akin to HTC's Sense?

Yup, exactly. It's Samsung's way of differentiating their phones, just like Sense for HTC and Blur for Motorola.

Yes, TW and Sense are basically similar. I don't have the hatred for those interfaces like many do. But, with ICS, they become redundant.

I'm not really recommending the GS3. I thought maybe you'd be interested in checking out the latest/greatest in the Android world.

I think Sprint has a variant of ATT's HTC One X, which is the phone I believe you're looking at. I like the ATT version of the phone and it was top on my list until the GS3 was announced. I personally find the HTC phones to be of better quality than the Samsungs, but Samsung seems to be the Android darling nowadays. I'm still undecided for myself as to which one to get.

I've been really impressed with the quality of the EVO. HTC really did a great job in engineering the phone. Good quality, unique / seksi look, unique perks (hdmi out, kickstand)...which is why I was leaning towards the new one.

I've got no experience with Samsung phones. All I know is that the HTC was the first smart phone I went to, and it really felt like an actual device...not a plasticy, cheap feeling, made as cheaply as possible, piece of crap.

I'll probably swing by the Sprint store and see whats out there, but I do have to profess a bit of HTC bias, I guess.

I've got HTC bias as well. Other than one dumb phone at home, the others are HTC. When I got my kids the Amaze 4G, we looked at the Samsung GS2, but no one was very interested, even though it got good reviews.

HTC just has a quality fell that I don't get with the Samsung products. Maybe the GS3 is different. That's why I'm waiting for it to see what it's like. I think the Win 8 phones will be good. I'd like to get a Win8 Lumia.

Not that I wouldn't look at them, but I do like Android, and I've got money invested in it...don't think I want to hop to the new Windows stuff just yet, until I see a lot more about it. I am interested in checking out windows 8 tho...thats on my todo list....item #45,322,167

Here's a new article by the Verge. Confirms that your EVO LTE consideration is a good idea.

Just upgraded from Evo 4g to Evo Lte. The speed differnce is amazing. Picture quality and features are really over the top. Comes with Dropbox service which is nice.Did I say it was really snappy compared to first gen evo?

At first thought it was more of a side grade than upgrade but once I got it, I realized it wasnt big upgrade.

I stopped by the Sprint store to check them out. They don't have the GS3 in stock, not even a demo, but if the other ones are any indication, I'll stick with HTC. Just felt like an inferior product, honestly, but to be fair, I think it was the 1st gen...but I also did get to try out the LTE, and yeah, I think that is what I will be getting. It's similar to the 4G layout wise, but much snappier, crisp response. The screen is nice and large (so was the 4G though), but this thing is LIGHT...holy cow....I would say half as light as the 4g was, and almost about half as thin, as well.

One thing I didn't like is that the battery is now internal, so cannot be swapped out (which, with the 4G, was something of a way of life, because it drained so fast). It says 7.5 hrs talk time, so I'm think 5-6 realistically, which should net me about 10-12 non active time, which I can definitely live with.

Soooo...I'll probably pick one up this week. With my upgrade, and 2 yr agreement, I can get it for 199.00...minus the 60 from selling back my phone puts me at 140...not too bad I guess for a decent upgrade.

The only problem is....the wife will want hers upgraded right after.

Thanks guys!

Oh and btw the battery life I would say is almost twice as long as my 1st gen evo.

Koil;

Working for a large retailer I can tell you several of our customers actually bought the Evo LTE and have come back to exchange it for the Galaxy S3.

While the Evo is a good unit, too many of our customers were unhappy with the orginal Evo (as are some of my coworkers) primarily due to lock ups and battery life.

Would be nice to have LTE up and running as this will tell us which has a better battery.

Also to consider Samsung (South Korean - Founded 1930's) is generally considered a better brand when compared with HTC (Taiwanese - Founded 1990's)

Well, I'm definitely a Samsung fan. I'm currently reading your message on a Samsung 23" LED monitor, and have not 1 but 2 Sammy's downstairs (50" DLP & 52" LCD)...I love them dearly and honestly won't buy another brand of television, if I have a choice.

That being said, I've not had a whole lot of exposure to their phones, and it's in general a completely different manufacturing process. They're supposed to have the GS3 in stock sometime next week....maybe I'll stop in and check it out...getting the new phone got put on hold for the time being, until I hear back from work and whether or not they're going to buy my phone or not.

Thanks for the info!

I am typing this response from a brand new, preordered Galaxy S3, 32GB version. Due to the demand for this device, ordering now will net you the phone on July 1 I think... it won't be in stores until then.

I had the Evo (original) for three weeks. Didn't like it...too big and too low battery life. I got an Epic 4G instead...two generations older than this phone. Liked it well enough, especially the hardware keyboard. Funny thing...now I don't miss the keyboard on the Epic...with such a large screen the GSIII does just fine.

As far as TouchWiz goes, I intensely disliked it kn the Epic, replacing it with LauncherPro as soon as possible. I haven't done that with the GSIII because TouchWiz's latest incarnation is actually perfectly fine. Have not used a device with the newest Sense so can't compare, but Samsung seems to have managed not to screw up the underlying OS with their own skin.

As an added benefit, you can change this phone's battery and its microSD card. One thing that shifted me away from The Evo was the lack of a user-replaceable battery. The GSIII also appears to get better battery life than the Evo.

So count me as a vote in favor of the Sammy. I will miss a hardware camera button, but that's a small price to pay for the yummy AMOLED display on this phone...and an LTE radio that, as opposed to the Evo, doesn't appear to be having issues out of the gate with maintaining connectivity.

I have the original EVO and have actually been quite happy with it, aside from battery life being a constant PITA.

Did you spend any time using the Sense UI? I think it works pretty well..never felt a need to change it, but never used anything else, either. How do they compare to each other? I like the crispness of the Sensu UI on the Evo LTE, but it was still pretty much the same thing as on the EVO 4G, with a few minor differences, that I could tell, anyway.

The non-detachable battery is also of concern to me, as thats usually needed at some point, if the phone goes wonky...not sure how you'd do it for the EVO LTE.

I'm going to have to pull the trigger soon...I'm still probably leaning towards the EVO, but wouldn't mind hearing what you think about the UI....when I checked out the GSII, which is I guess the Epic...the UI seemed...I dunno, old or flat...didn't look very good, but then again, I think it may have even been the 1st gen, so not exactly a fair comparison.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time...I appreciate it.

TouchWiz was inferior to Sense, no question, on older phones, includinf the Epic that I owned. I had the Evo 4G and liked Sense more.

However the newest TouchWiz (GSIIi) is reasonable and modern-looking. Not sure if it's in par with the newest Sense but it's at least close.

I still have my Epic and it is the best phone I have ever had, partly because of the keyboard. I got worried that no high end phones would be coming down the pipeline with a keyboard but I have seen news that the Motorola Photon 2 LTE will most likely have a keyboard and a monstrous screen, due out around July or August. really crossing my fingers. I have always liked Motorola handsets.

I have the first gen EVO too and I'm looking at the Samsung GS3 I would be more hearing from when the first one is rooted.
