What to expect/ask when upgrading to 150/65 next week?

Finally after speaking to a few CSR's and waiting for a tech that never came, because the order wasn't placed properly, Verizon finally gave me a date for next Thursday. This is my set up right now, BPON ONT, router revision E connected using MoCA and located on the 2nd floor. My questions are: what is the Verizon technician going to replace? What should I ask for? What kind of equipment is he going to use? How long is this going to take? Someone mentioned in an earlier post that with the new speeds, I will be using CAT5 instead of coaxial to connect to the Internet. Is it true? Also some people have asked the technician to install the ONT inside. Is that a good idea? My router is on the 2nd floor, how is the technician going to bring theCAT 5 cable from the outside to the 2nd floor? Thank you for all the information you can give me.

Wherever the old ont is I would gather is where the new ont is going to be placed. The battery backup unit might need to be replaced as well. It was on my install. Most likely you will be given a new Actiontec Rev I router. Yes you will need to be switched from moca to cat 5 for internet. I am sure the tech has a latter and will make a small hole through the wall which will be near the ground of the room you want the router to be in. He will install what looks like a phone jack, but it will be where the cat 5 cable from the ont will be connected to, and you plug an ethernet cable from that into the new router. Not much really you need to ask the technician other than hoping he can place the cat 5 where you want it to be. A good tip for him and I don't think it would be a problem =).

VZ technicians are not permitted to accept tips and doing so could possibly cost them their job. VZ management monitors this forum so it is never a good idea to mention anything about tips here on DSLreports.

The best tip you can give them, food. Works every time and should never result in termination.

I always give them choice of soda/sports drinks and snacks they can carry in truck and with the heat wave now they would appreciate that far more than a few bucks anyways.

My garbage men have hauled away stuff not normally accepted because 4-5 times a summer I leave them cold gatorades....

So the coaxial won't be used at all?Would the wi-fi speed increase too?

The Coax still needs to be connected if you have Verizon STBs. The router's WAN interface is just switched to CAT5.

The new router will support 802.11n, so if your devices also support that, there may be a boost in wireless performance as well, but don't expect to get 150Mb over WiFi (although it is possible).

so in order to get the 150mb or 300 requires new installation of cable? so they would have to get rid of the coax cable that is connected to my router to an cat5? am i right? and of the replace of a newer model ONT?

Cat5 yes, ONT depends on what model you have now.

And they do not get rid of the coax connection to the router if you have video service. They will add CAT5 for the data to the router.

Separating the two using different connections can alleviate the bottleneck if you are watching VOD and going on the Internet I suppose. Will the new router give me faster speed wirelessly?

It more that the MoCA is limited on transmission speeds. Cat5 (or Cat 5e) can scale up to one gigabit which is better for potential future speed bumps!

It changes nothing your VOD will just arrive via ethernet and will be delivered via COAX to your STB which is why your router will need both connections to allow all your services to work correctly like VOD, guide and CID and remote dvr.

and not likely...Actiontec routers wireless will still be so so though it will have N capacity.

How do Verizon technicians bring the CAT5 cable to the house. My router is on the second floor and I wonder if the will do like the cable guys do, they drill a hole on the outside wall of the room where the router is.

Yes, they may also go up a gutter and through soffit and down through wall gap via the ceiling.

don't forget to get a GB NIC for the PC's and don't forget to upgrade all of your wireless devices to wireless N

Any G's will make the wifi performance suffer, if I remember correctly.

These are the specifications for my built-in network cards:

Two independent 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet (RJ-45) interfaces with support for jumbo frames

Do I still need the GB NIC card?

I am a little concerned about having the CAT5 run outside exposed to the elements. Does Verizon use any tracking to protect the ethernet cable when they install it mostly outside. The technician wouldn't snake the ethernet cable through the walls in the house in order to bring the cable to the second floor where the router is.
How do I upgrade all of my wireless devices to wireless N?

No need to worry about cat5 external to you home. I've had mine external now for 6 years with no issues and nor should you expect any.

You can only switch devices to N that support N. If your device is G only you will still need to run the router in Mixed mode.

Sorry but google is your friend for your devices to determine if they even support N.
