| Sound problem I've been having some sound problems as of lately. I've had this pc for a little over a year and the problems just started recently. I updated the sound drivers and the problem still persists. My pc is hooked up to my TV via HDMI. I also have it hooked up via S/PDIF.
The problem seems to happen when I change the input, if i switch my tv from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 to watch cable and then switch back, the TV sound for the PC will be gone. It will try to use the S/PDIF for sound. Logging off my user name and logging back replaces the sound to default to TV again. I've even checked the sound settings and when this problem happens and the TV sound doesn't even appear in the sound settings. I have the TV set as default as well.
There are times when the sound will also disappear if the screen goes into sleep, occasionally this will happen but not all the time.
I guess I just find it odd that after over a year this problem would just be happening now without me changing any settings. Any ideas? -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

 | Could the problem be with your TV instead of the computer?
Do you have any other computers you can test on this TV? |

| reply to MuDvAyNe HDMI audio (aside from laptops) does not use the onboard or sound card audio drivers. It uses the HDMI audio chipset and those drivers are part of the video driver package.
With that said, if the audio chipset is disappearing from the setup, I'd suspect a hardware fault. Either the video card, HDMI cable, or the TV itself. -- Google is your Friend |

pogPremium join:2004-06-03 Kihei, HI | reply to MuDvAyNe in device manager, there are likely 2 audio devices. one will be named something you'd expect like "realtek hd audio device" and the other might be "nvidia hd audio device".
as mentioned, HDMI carries video and audio, and there is no clear path for the realtek (eg) device to connect... hence the need for another device dedicated to the video output. part of the issue really comes from HDCP requirements.
either way, you have not updated all audio devices until you install the latest driver suite for your video card. try this and see what happens.
there are a lot of other possibilities, including as mentioned, hardware problems. do you have another hdmi cable to try? what happens if you disconnect the s/pdif hookup? -- My Site |

 | reply to MuDvAyNe What kind of machine is it? You should update your drivers only with what the manufacturer has supplied, unless you know for sure drivers from services like Windows Update and other sources will work.
Check your power settings. I think in Vista/7 there are some settings in there you should probably disable for your sound card/pci management, maybe others.
Update your BIOS and chipset drivers also.
Finally, check your Sound settings in Control Panel. If you have junked up some settings you need to clear those out. Go to device manager and uninstall the device(s), then from Add/Remove or Uninstall Manager in control panel. Reboot and reinstall drivers. There is a sound applet in control panel that handles default devices and similar settings you need to verify.
It should have two audio devices, HDMI and onboard card, so you will need to address both in the same manner.
Also, check your manufacturer website, there may be known issues. Google it. |

4 edits | reply to MuDvAyNe Now that I think of it, this problem has been happening since updating my video card drivers last month. Explains a lot.. I guess I should of realized that the sound was from the video card also since it is HDMI. I feel like such a newbie right now. I am going to see if maybe there is an update for the video card again or if not try reinstalling the drivers.
Edit:
Drivers are up to date. Like I stated above this all happened once I updated the drivers last month. Unplugging the S/PDIF and also disabling it in Windows does nothing. Now it detects no sound at all. It actually shows the AMD HDMI Output as not being plugged in. I am going to try a different HDMI cable just to see what happens.
Edit 2 :
It's not the HDMI cable.
Edit 3 :
It's the drivers. I just deleted them all and went back to the originals and the sound stays when I switch inputs on my tv. I am going to try and install the new drivers and see if it happens again. If it does looks like I will just use the old drivers
Edit 4:
Same problem again when updating the drivers. Looks like I will stick with the old ones. Going to test out Diablo now and see if I see any downgrade in performance. I hope not. -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |

I believe this same thing happened with a Media Player I built for my son last Christmas. I think it's a software conflict/issue.
For W7. Try this:
1. Open Speakers Properties. 2. In "Advanced" tab, uncheck both "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device", and "Give exclusive mode applications priority". 3. Reboot & see if that fixes it. EDIT: 4. Don't forget to click "Apply", before closing the window.
Good luck -- Come fold for a cure with us @ Team Helix.

| reply to MuDvAyNe Just an FYI update. I noticed that there was an ATI Catalyst beta update. 12.6 which did address HDMI audio fix. I downloaded the beta and the Catalyst also updated this time! Amazing!! Anyway the beta drivers have fixed the sound disappearing when changing inputs! -- Mets, Cowboys, Devils |
