The cord cutter exists, and it is a geek.

Yet, a majority of pay-TV subs are going up.

Verizon added 180,000 subs
Time Warner added 592,000 subs, but some were from Insight.
Comcast lost 37,000
Cablevision lost 7,000
Dish added 104,000
Directv added 81,000
Charter added 27,000

I am going to ignore the Time Warner number because that was from acquisition mostly. So, all total, there were more subs gained than lost overall. Which means more customers entered the pay-tv market.

Now, I am not saying that cord cutting doesn't exist. It does exist, but its still a techie thing to do. Finding all the entertainment options on the internet, including live sporting events, is hard to find without going an illegal route. For people like my parents, who are used to flipping on the DVR and watching a show, its not easy hooking up the computer to the HDTV, going to ABC.com, and streaming the video.

The technology will get there eventually. Which is why when you read about these cord-cutters, you will understand why it is a techie lifestyle change.

Yea ,and how many did AT&T Uverse add last quarter? This website is so full of crap. They post these headlines to endorse hidden agendas.

PS, while this website was down a few weeks ago, they headlined that Cablevision ADDED video subs. They headline that these companies are adding subs, yet, they headline people are cutting the cord. OBVIOUSLY the next story will be that the cable co's are LYING on their quarterly reports. LOL

Are there people "cutting the cord"? Sure. 1% of them will post in this thread. lmao. The impact is microscopic and negligible.

I don't put the blame on the headliners. The headlines are what brings people to the site and compels them to comment. That being said, the headlines are focused on the high tech route, which is what cutting the cord is all about right now.

I could cut the cord easily, but I won't do it because I like having 1080i quality TV signal. If I lost my job, I would cut the TV cord right away without hesitation. I look at TV as a luxury, not a necessity.

In short, don't blame DSLR for the headlines. Just look at the actual data like I did and post it. Let the techies comment that they cut the cord and it was easy for them to do it. The simple fact of the matter is that the rest of the people who subscribe to pay TV are doing it because they lack the techie knowledge to get everything they are paying for with pay tv.

So overall maybe 1 million subs added. Depending how much of TWC increase was from Insight. Of course the population has increased too. About 2.8 million since last year. Since there are about 2.6 people per household that means an increase of 1.08 million households. So pay TVs increase in subs are only because of population increase.

True, but that doesn't show a reduction in the amount of pay tv subs. When the economy was in the crapper, you could see a drastic change. Now, the economy is rebounding and people are paying. If you read the headline, you would think that you are seeing a downturn. Dig a little deeper, and you see that things are still going strong. Sure, a select small group of people are cutting the cord, but that isn't relative to the overall subscriber base.

The best HD signal is still over the air.

Cable & satellite all compress HD to some degree.

And I bet nearly all of these adds are bundles.

$99/month isn't bad when it's for digital cable, unlimited phone, and 6+ MBps internet.

But NON-promo/bundle packages are still very expensive.

Link? Source?

In my experience, it depends on where you live and what service you choose to get. I have been in areas where OTA is horrible because you don't live in an area with strong OTA signal. Then I have been in some areas where any pay-TV provider has crap signal because of obstructions like trees, or oversubscription, or a bad infrastructure. To say that OTA is the best is a false statement.

And I bet nearly all of these adds are bundles.

I would agree with you here. Most people are probably bundling 2-3 services, like I am. Nothing wrong with it if you want TV and internet, or tv, internet, and phone. I would love to see the bundling thing get removed, but it isn't going to happen.

Yup, I agree.

Windows Media Center was the first shot across the bow. I bet some company will find a way to make the contracts work and deliver content over the internet without pay TV services. Its going to take a few years, but we will get there.

The issue I have is that this "little wave" has been tracked over the course of the last couple years and it hasn't grown much.

Re: The cord cutter exists, and it is a geek.

Thats simply because there is no centralized media player box that supports all forms of online streaming. Heck there is only one company so far ( cant remember the name but you can find it here on BBR) that's trying to offer just the local affiliate channels and is only charging something around $12. per month and the cable CO is fighting tooth and nail to shut them down. There is your corporate monopolies at work to protect there revenue.

Ever tried using ANY well know stand alone media player... Sony SMP xxx, WD live, netgear Nexius, Roku. etc. and you will notice that you cant stream basic Hulu too it, and only some models carry Crackle which just is not good enough. Also there no plug-in (add on upgrade software) for you to watch local broadcast through them, you still have to log on with a laptop to watch locals online. So the monopolies have shut down our options by requiring media players not allow those options . If these options were available through a stand alone media player that still has USB/ wireless network support (as I connect my 1tb HDD up to and watch my collection of dixv movies through it) I believe the tide would change a lot quicker.

It all about supply and demand, It they supplied the option the demand would grow.
