jig join:2001-01-05 Hacienda Heights, CA | pool issues - skimmer/strainer junk so, our skimmer has issues. just to make sure we're talking about the same thing - it's the contraption that includes the rectangular cut out of the side of the pool that goes into a sump space with a strainer and holes that end up reaching the pool pump. basically, it skims the detrius that floats on the surface of the water so that you just pull the strainer and you get all flotsam out of the pool.
ours is a sta-rite system of some kind, a little old, and it looks as though the surface concrete shifted and cracked the well at some point so that the top half of the well is a little off from the bottom part of the well.
anyway.
the system appears to have included an o-ring at the bottom of the sump that keeps a properly sized strainer stuck to the bottom of the sump. this can be a problem when you have a lot of leaves - the strainer fills with leaves and can end up lighter than water (air gets caught in the leaves, leaves caught in the strainer) and then, if the strainer isn't stuck to the bottom with the suction caused by the o-ring, it floats up and the garbage gets sucked through to the pool pump (possibly clogging that line, which is a pain to unclog).
so, we don't have the o-ring any more, and there a bit of a question whether we can even fit a properly sized strainer in the hole. but, we want to try. and it seems almost impossible to describe what we need to the local pool guys - they just keep offering alternatives.
does anyone here know of a way to get factory specs on something like this so that I might be able to either buy or make the correct o-ring and strainer (maybe even custom made to fit in our "custom" well)? or, does anyone have some other guidance on pool stuff, or maybe a pool forum with some experts that are willing to opine? i'm almost at the point where i'm just going to pay through the nose to have a pool contractor come out and fix things so that I don't have to think about it anymore. I'm thinking a custom stainless basket. Should be heavy enough to not float. |

I've not seen skimmer baskets with an O ring but maybe there is such a thing.
These are the type of baskets I use. I have lots of leaves and debris: »www.lesliespool.com/Home/Pumps-a···851.html
The "tower" in the basket allows water to flow freely even if the basket is full of debris.

Seriously, I can't see a basket floating up when the pump is on. |

Seriously, I can't see a basket floating up when the pump is on. When the baskets get rather full of leaves and the pump shuts off the baskets can float. When the pump comes back on the basket may not go back to the correct position I've seen it.
The rock/brick thing works but you keep forgetting and throw them out with the debris.
That's where the heavier, tower basket comes into play.
Ya they are pricy but they last 5 years or more with a little TLC. |

| reply to jig Sound like you just have a poorly designed / broken skimmer. I think you already know what the answer is - dig it up and replace it. I really don't think it will be that bad. Most reputable pool service companies are equipped with concrete saws and whatnot to make it the least invasive. -- ...because I care. |
