Rojo join:2009-04-14 New York, NY kudos:1 | [OS X] Router when no router? My Network settings show a Router IP number. However my cable modem is directly plugged into the iMac's Ethernet port, no router used.
Any idea why it shows "Router: 24.186.xx.x" ?

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:6 | reply to Rojo Yes. Every network needs a router to.. route packets between different networks.
The router is most likely located at your local head-end/CMTS. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

 | reply to Rojo Cable modem is a router. A router is a device that converts the Cable/fiber/dsl to Ethernet. It also acts as a Gateway that provides IP address.
Your Cable modem might have been set/configured as a bridge and you are receiving the IP address provided by the ISP's routers to the Cable modem. I have this design. |

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:6 | Exactly. Motorola modems do have a special mode that distributes private IP addresses in the 192.168.100.x space when there's no cable connection, so I revised my post to give him that much. But the rest was wrong. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

 | reply to vukodlak75 Routers never give out IP. It's the DHCP Server that does. A router can act as a DHCP Server if it is enabled for a particular interface. |

 | reply to Rojo I bet your Router address is: 24.186.xx.1
And that your IP is same first 3 octets and last is something larger than 1
And the field marked as Router is your gateway address
ot I suggest you get a router soon as you can to make it harder for a knuckled to cause computer grief for you |

No. Yes.

How do I tell?

 | I usually see IP the way I 'bet' but doesn't always apply
I understand WAN network router address and gateway are the same thing
Unless you have a router in your house then you will see your computer's gateway becomes your router's address - the router's gateway is the network router's address - supplied by the modem That is one of the things a router does for you - to keep a hardware separation between you and internet
Not disputing having ones firewall up helps very much... |

Do you know what ProcessID600 on Safari is? I'm getting a lot of opened ports with that. Also PID1598.
Is there an app that will instantly and selectively close ports you choose? |
