[OS X] Time Machine Question

I currently use TM as my backup solution, and I was thinking about buying a 2nd drive to alternate the 2 so one is always offsite. Will that confuse Time Machine by alternating hard drives?

You can, but it's kind of a pain. This explains how : »lifehacker.com/5543791/back-up-y···-machine
If it's offsite back-up that your interested in, you might check this out : »www.dollydrive.com/

Do you currently use an External drive for your backups or is it the time capsule (Hard drive / router combo). If it's the latter there is an easy solution. Simply connect the extra drive to the Time capsule and in airport utility there is an archive button that will copy the contents of the Time capsule to the external drive.

That article refers to backing up different files to different drives. I just want to alternate which drive all my files are backed up with.

Good question, I’d like to know if there is a viable option here too.

I used to backup to a local server (Windows Home Server V1 / PP3) but OS X Lion killed that functionality. So I started to use a 1TB USB drive which is a bit of a pain but functional (much more limited with respect to disc space).

I’m wonder if you can just copy the USB drive to another USB drive. Not as convenient as an incremental solution assuming this would work.

This will work. Though if you later have to backup to it directly it will have to scan the entire backup (taking a LONG time) before it actually begins backing up.
