Re: Need FIOS instead

Sure they can. AT&T and them could both roll it out and pay cash to do it. As a matter of fact I would be willing to bet they couldnt even roll it out fast enough to spend all their quarterly earnings.

Oh that's right... you mean they cant afford it AND still make their billions in profits to hand to out to their shareholders. God forbid they have to give up a little for future growth and prosperity. They want it all now!

it would cost 500 billion usd to run ftth to the whole usa no single company has that much money microsoft apple and google combined would have to do that or around 8 verizonz 7 at&ts

It very well may though I believe your numbers are made up and highly exaggerated. However, how much did Verizon make last quarter alone? How much did AT&T make last quarter alone? What about Comcast?

So my point still stands: those companies can roll out fiber to the home to every single customer they have and pay cash to do it because they would not be able to roll it out fast enough to even burn through their quarterly earnings. You arguing otherwise is not based on past facts and is just silliness.

1st quarter net income for AT&T 3.5 billion.
Verizon net income 3.9 billion.
Comcast operating income 2.2 billion.

So even if they allocated 100% of their combined incomes to fiber build outs, it would fall well short of what's necessary. Did you really think they had unlimited resources?

Do you have no reading comprehension skills? Read both of my statements again, gather understanding and then think before your reply.

Being that I anticipate you missing it YET AGAIN, let me say it one more time but more slowly.

They can't install it fast enough to eat up all their quarterly income for every quarter for the next several years it would take to complete.

You asked, I answered.

I'm curious if you're capable of making a post that isn't thick with condescension. I'm guessing no.

With all the people that are out of work, if these telcos really wanted to spend all their net incomes as fast as they could, they'd have no trouble hiring enough people to dig ditches and lay cable. In the real world, no one operates a business that way. Your whole point seems to be that you want the government to force telcos to spend every dime they possibly can to build out their fiber networks. It makes me sad that anyone wants the government to have that power.

I'm not sure that's true. Verizon's FIOS rollout has cost 23 billion[1] and only covers a small fraction of the country. Verizon's quarterly profits are about 1.38 billion[2]. It would take MANY YEARS of profit to roll FIOS out to the entire country.

Plus, there's the concept that a company's direction is set by shareholders, not the general public (unless the government wants to invest in enough Verizon stock to take a controlling stake, which would be an expensive proposition). I feel no more comfortable forcing Verizon to invest in infrastructure for my benefit than I do forcing you to do something for my benefit. Now, things like municipal fiber, making it easier for other companies to enter the market, etc, would be good alternatives, but I ain't telling Verizon where to spend their money.
