[HSI] DOCSIS 3 modem recommendation?

Guys,
Just got Charter HSI and its blazin. I just don't like paying $7 a month for modem rental. Do you guys recommend a certain brand?

The Charter tech setup an Ubee modem/wireless router for me already. But I have an Airport Extreme I'd like to use instead of the Ubee. Newegg, ebay?

TIA

Stick to retail outlets and away from eBay. Too many stories of stolen/unreturned modems being exchanged there...

Hit up Amazon and get the 6121 or Ubee D3 8x4 modem. The Moto 6141 also is great but not sure if Charter supports that one (they should )

I'm using a Zoom 5341. It's officially supported (confirmed) and is able to support 8 downstream channel bonding....if it's ever offered. It's priced well (under $100) and actually looks really nice.

I bought my Surfboard 6121 from Staples using a coupon and price match to Amazon (check slickdeals). I ended up getting it for $49 because they price matched incorrectly. Usually you can get them for around $60-70 though.

I'm going to guess the vast majority of customers who own their own modem will be using a SB51xx or a SB612X. They are simple modems, but they work extremely well.

What's so Top Secret about the 26th? Probably not that it matters for me since I already own my modem, just curious in case the info might help others.

You should have gotten a notice about it in the mail or with your last statement. If not, it should be very soon.

Ouch!

$100 for a modem? Does look like a decent one though. Don't know anything about Linksys modems and in fact, didn't even know they made them!

Well it's actually a Cisco. You can get the same on ebay used for about $50. Since Charter does not rent out Cisco modems you don't need to worry about a used Cisco modem being blacklisted on Charter.

Yeah,
Cisco/Linksys. One in the same!

Why would you NOT have to worry about it being blacklisted? ANY modem has the potential to be blacklisted if Charter deems necessary, for what ever reason. They have blacklisted perfectly good SurfBoard modems in the past, which are probably the most popular/common brand.

I'm not talking about blacklisting a brand/model. I'm talking about blacklisting a modem that was stolen from Charter by someone renting it.

You said NOTHING what so ever about a stolen modem and even if it was stolen and Charter recovered it, it probably wouldn't get blacklisted then. If they can even blacklist a single modem, which shouldn't be entirely impossible? Besides, how would you know if that Cisco modem you just bought, wasn't stolen from some where else?

I'm almost beginning to wonder if you even have a clue what you're talking about or doing!

Charter could care less if someone uses a modem stolen from a competing ISP like Time Warner, Comcast, Suddenlink. ISP's do not share MAC addresses and lists with each other. If someone steals a Charter modem the MAC address of it will be blacklisted in Charter's system. Someone else will be able to use that modem with other ISP's but not Charter.

Most Cisco modems on EBay are most likly stolen from Comcast unless they were bought from a ISP being that there is no where that I know of that a consumer can buy a "Cisco" modem only the "Linksys" badged model is available directly to consumers.
