 | [Apps] Downloading issues on Motorola DEFY I need to download the app called Astro File manager but whenever I click on the INSTALL button it says that this ap will be downloaded shortly. I connected the phones USB cable to the PC and then I loggged on to my google play account and then in the downloads section on my phone, I cannot see the downloaded file.
I clicked on the install button while the phone was connected via the USB cable. But no download appeared under the Apps menu under the Downloads icon.
»play.google.com/store/apps/detai···ro&hl=en
So its telling me that this app will be downloaded shotly, but no action appears.
I selected on my my phone to use the USB instead of charging. Do I have to unable my Wireless connection on my phone which was disabled at the time or not?
And I can I place my PDF files onto my phone via a USB connected to my PC? Will the Astro file app do such a thing? Or, do I need to create a folder under the phones USB drive on the PC? I do not understand.
Im sorry, but I am very new to smartphones....Please foregive me. |

Just to avoid any confusion... try to download the app without the USB cable connected. It shouldn't really be an issue unless you have dependent apps stored on your SD card (unlikely but rule it out).
Understand that your PC is not needed for installing apps via the google play store. There are methods of app management via PC but get the basics down first.
Get the app installed first... then learn the abilities or non-abilities of it.
It sounds like you just want to copy some files to your phone to PC or vice versa. Drag and drop actions in most PC GUIs will accomplish this... but installing an app in itself does not require a PC. You're getting ahead of yourself. Download app from google play... after download you should see a prompt to install. There should not be a need to search for download location.. It should be verbose and simple. |

4 edits | I managed to install the ES File Manager and ASTRO from 4Shared.com
That worked.
But...I think the Motorola DEFY has its own File manager called FILES like here in the print screen.
Maybe it is a file manager, and I added a PDF file to test it, and the PDF file showed under the Docs folder (which I created from the mounted USB drive using the phones cable connected to the PC) inside that FILES app thats in the picture. |

Hope you're able to get some help. |

2 edits | Now since I got the ES File Explorer on there, is there a way to back it up onto my USB flash drive in case my phone takes a "dump" on me or in cases were I have to do a factory reset?
I like ES File Explorer by the way. Nice GUI. But now I have both, ASTRO included.
To answer mastsethi - I think Motorola phones are on the downhill...They should stick with making radios and communication systems for high-end stuff.
But I love this phone anyway.
Going back on topic here, I would like to somehow backup the ES File Exporer into my USB stick without a third-party app. My guess is that the phone has to be ROOTED first. But I am not sure on that.
Thanks. |

First, the app isn't going anywhere, you should be able to download it from where ever you got it from. It's a very popular file explorer.
But, in the vein of "backing things up", how it is normally done on Android, is that your entire phone is thought of like an "image", and there are backup applications out there that will back up your entire phone for you, so that should you need to restore for whatever reason, you're able to do so. You can select which apps get backed up, which apps to restore, etc. I do believe that root is required to get the most from them.
Long story, short...don't think of the apps as actual files (like executables) as the file that you're talking about is called an .apk file, and really only exists on your phone until its installed, I believe. There is no need to keep a copy of the app somewhere, as it's out in the Android Store, Amazon Store, the developers site, etc...
I hope that makes sense. -- I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.- Edward Everett Hale

 | Thanks of that detaile explaination. But only video and image files can be indeed moved, dragged, copied, removed, and pasted when the phone is connected to the USB to PC. And I can get those backed up. But APK files are different though I guess. |

KoilPremium join:2002-09-10 Irmo, SC kudos:1 | They're different because the OS installs them I think as soon as they're seen...I think it uses a black hole approach (meaning that once an APK appears in a particular directory, it installs it)I'm not 100% on that, but the APK files can absolutely be moved around. I've downloaded them before and placed them in the root directories and ran them.
When you attach your phone via USB, it should just show up as a drive, like a thumb drive on your PC. There are protected system files that you can't manipulate probably, but you should be able to view and copy anything and everything. THAT IS THROUGH A WINDOWS EXPLORER CONNECTION VIA USB.
In File Explorer, you can navigate much the same way,but since it operates within the OS, it's got less permission due to OS restrictions.
Just treat your phone when connected to PC like a thumb drive, and when moving within File Explorer, there is only so much you can do, but really shouldn't have a need to mess with too much, and you're not going to find specific install directories, either, within the phone. -- I am only one, but I am one. 1 edit | Can anyone tell me that in the picture is the last one down from my Motorola DEFY phone, there is this app called Files.
I know for sure that I DID NOT install it. But It was there when I got the phone. But when I tap it, I have to select either SD Card or Shared Files. Of course, I tap SD Card and it does look like a File Manager.
All I want to know is that if it is a native app that comes already pre-loaded with all Motorola DEFY phones?
If not preloaded, what is this APP's name called? |
|
KoilPremium join:2002-09-10 Irmo, SC kudos:1 | Yes, it likely came pre-loaded on your phone. You won't be able to remove it unless you root your phone, along with the other stuff that was likely installed on your phone, i.e. Amazon MP3 player, Blockbuster Video thingee, and others. |
|
2 edits | No no no no....I DO NOT want to remove it at all. Actually, I like it better than Astro or even ES File Explorer.
But can someone find out what is the EXACT name of this "FILES" App called so I can maybe download it and install it on my other Android phone?
Thx. |
