Having trouble setting up WDS on tomato firmware

I followed the above guide. I'm having trouble getting my secondary router to connect.

I have to disable security on primary router, wait for the second router to connect, then reenable security. It works for a bit, then I will have to repeat the process. I don't want to just turn off security completely.

That doesn't always work either and only wants to connect when it feels like it. How do I fix this?

First and most important question, are BOTH routers running Tomato firmware? Because if they're not, then that's probably your problem.

WDS is NOT a wifi-certified protocol, and therefore implementations vary, leading to incompatibilities across manufacturers. Heck, many times it won't even work with the same manufacturer as they sometimes change the implementation across product lines. This is what makes using WDS such a PITA. The only chance of it working, or working reliably, is when you can GUARANTEE the implementations are the same, such as when all WDS partners are running Tomato, or dd-wrt, or the same stock firmware. Otherwise, all bets are off and you'll need to consider universal/client bridging using standard wifi-certified protocols (b/g/n).

Different routers, but same firmware version.
