[CenturyTel] Problems switching from Cox HSI to CenturyLink DSL

I'm trying to switch from Cox HSI to CenturyLink DSL.

My plan was to have the DSL activated and tested first before turning off my Cox HSI and Phone (and TV). Unfortunately I guess I didn't think of something obvious. But it appears my DSL service won't work while phone service is still hooked up to Cox.

CenturyLink can't touch the competitors equipment. So they can't do anything until I get Cox to disconnect the equipment.

Cox however will remotely disconnect my services on a scheduled date, but they won't schedule a day when a tech will unhook their equipment to allow CenturyLink to connect their's. What Cox says is they disconnect equipment at an unscheduled time later when someone happens to be in the neighborhood.

I'm a bit dumbfounded. It seems once I schedule my Cox internet to be turned off. I'll be without Internet service for an unknown amount of time, days, maybe weeks. This just seems bizarre and unreasonable.

This can't possible be the normal process switching from cable to DSL can it?

personally i would rip all the cox equipment off the internal lines yourself at the time of the centurylink install. im guessing its all hooked into the house at the nid.

Guess is wrong. Cox is cable not DSL; there is no NID.

What equipment has to be removed? Splitters? Modem? TV box?

Are you going to port your phone number? If so, that's all that is needed. It could take up to a week (based on my experience).

Just curious as to why you are leaving Cox.

yeah i know this, but the cox system is hooked into the internal phone wiring somewhere. why not do it at the nid.

there uis obviously cox and centurylink systems being intertwined otherwise he could just have it hooked up no problem. but he cant.

I do not know if he is in a house or an apartment - I **think** it is a house.

If the house is not over about 20 years old (Gilbert, AZ
probably so), usually there is a central box on the side of the house (external or internal) where all the phone and coax is accessible to make the runs.

That is where Cox has made the phone, Internet, and TV connections.

All that is required is to disconnect the phone line there.

CL can now make all the runs to the NID (or connect the phone to the disconnected phone line).

You will have to do some research. Are your telephones plugged into a telephone jack in each room? If they are not and a cordless phone base station is plugged directly into the telephone jack on the Cable company modem you will probably not have to make changes in the home telephone wiring. I know someone that went from regular telephone service to Cable VoIP. They simply plugged their cordless telephone base station into the telephone jack on the Cable modem. They did not make any changes in the home telephone wiring.

During the conversion process you can still plug a cordless telephone base station into the telephone jack on the cable modem to continue voice telephone service until your telephone line is activated and your Cable VoIP is disconnected. Have CenturyLink assign a temporary telephone number to the land line until you can port your old telephone number to your telephone land line.

If your telephones are plugged into the jacks in each room, first disconnect the Cable company modem from the home telephone wiring and connect a cordless phone base station directly to the VoIP modem. Find where the wire serving the telephones were disconnected from the Network Interface Device. Reconnect the home telephone wiring to the Network Interface Device. You can plug a standard telephone into the home telephone wiring to confirm that you are connected to the telephone company service. When your telephone number is ported to CenturyLink, disconnect the cordless phone from the Cable modem and connect it to a nearby telephone jack. Do not forget to install a DSL filter at each telephone.

My Cox hookup has the Internet connected to the existing Internet coax wiring (directly from the street) at the junction box then directly to the MODEM.

The phone goes to the junction box telephone wiring and is connected directly to the phone side of the MODEM.

The phones are connected to the inside jacks.

When I tried Cox TV for a month or so, they hijacked the the internal CATV coax for the TV.

DirecTV did the same thing for the TV.

There is no spare pair in the IW to hook up DSL to test on?
