It always seems like there are just more comments and discussion about the lesser used desktops and distros which to the non-commenter can give the impression that something might be more widely used that it actually is. It's like reddit and Arch Linux. 
From a North American perspective you don't have much KDE work being done here. There are a fair number of devs but their numbers are dwarfed by those in Europe which is where all the big KDE distros are from except for Slackware and the Fedora KDE variant. This leads to a little bias in the US tech media since it's more fun to report about the desktop that the guy you had drinks or lunch with makes or uses.
The reality of it is that a person using something that does what they need and is reasonably trouble free doesn't spend time discussing it. I was thinking the other day about how I don't post much in forums about KDE or file bug reports and it mostly comes down to not having any major issues to ask questions about or file bugs. It does what it's suppose to do and that can lead to boredom and lack of talking about it. If it needed new users to survive then you would see an endless stream of supporters talking about exciting things it does but it doesn't need this or those kind of people thankfully.  I'd go so far to say that it probably attracts the kind of people that can focus on the results rather than getting upset about the color of the hammer driving the nails.
