| Anyone use gmail and iOS5? I am having a hell of a time getting this to work right. I want my phone to get notifications from gmail when new email arrives. (Push notifications). While leaving the email on the server so if I am on my computer the email goes to my inbox on the computer as well.
If I just setup "Gmail" then I have to have mail open on my iphone to get mail notifications. But the email still shows up on multiple computers.
If I set the mail up using Google Sync the email is delete from the server and doesn't show up in desktop email clients.
What in the heck am I doing wrong?
I want to be able to receive the email on my iphone but also have a copy of the email show up on my desktop computer(s). Imap is currently setup... help? -- Where's th' DAFFY DUCK EXHIBIT?? |

| reply to clevere1 It is my understanding you can't use push for gmail. I'm not even given the option, however I seem to get email as it arrives (I hear it on my phone, iPad and computer at the same time) -- | map your city | |

Do I have to set them up as an exchange server as well? the two are mutually exclusive. you can either: (a) use push email by configuration of an exchange account. any change that occurs on your phone will be reflected in the full email inbox or (b) use pop3 access on your phone. you will not get full push. you will have the option of keeping the mail on the server since it will be downloading a local copy on your phone. any changes will be locally significant.
i believe the "gmail" configuration uses imap -- which is a combination of the two (albeit the exact opposite of what you want -- no push *and* reflected changes).

It also keeps all the mail on the server, so it should show up in both places.
I have no idea if gmail's IMAP implementation allows for the above two things, though.
Exchange (google sync) is really want the OP wants. Real push email and everything is centralized on the server. The Mac clients can be setup with IMAP and still see the same messages. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

| reply to clevere1 Exchange (Google Sync) keeps a copy of all email on the server at all times.
Because you are not seeing it on your other computers, I suspect they might be configured to use POP3 and are only downloading unread email.
What you want to do is make sure all computers and devices are using either IMAP or Exchange, like Thinkdiff said. -- -Ryan I use Linux, OS X, iOS and Windows. Let the OS wars die. |

kitsune join:2001-11-26 Sacramento, CA | reply to clevere1 in order to use IMAP on gmail, you have to enable it through the website first.
go to gmail.com and once your mail loads click the gear in the upper right and choose settings. Then go to POP and IMAP. Make sure IMAP is turned on. You will then need to add it as a new account on both the phone and the computer in order to make sure the device understands it's a IMAP account.
I use it on my iPhone and they show up on their own all the time. I have never tested it to see if they show up right as they are delivered or not though. |

| reply to clevere1 Can you see your "All Mail" folder? Look in Settings under Labels and see if it's set to show or hide.
I use gmail with IOS5 as an Exchange account. Sorry I don't use Push on the gmail account.
My gmail has IMAP enabled.
I use Thunderbird client via POP3.
I have another Thunderbird client using IMAP.
I also use gmail's webmail on multiple computers.
The POP3 client downloads messages and marks them as downloaded, but they are left on the server.
In gmail I have this radio button selected ... "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder: Archive the message (default)
After the POP3 client downloads a message, it is removed from the webmail and Exchange inboxes, but it stays in the All Mail folder, so I just look there. -- USNG: 16TDN2870 Find your USNG coordinates: USNGWeb |
