[CenturyTel] Very disappointed with service

I have had Centurytel/Centurylink service for over 3 years and it has been nothing but problems. Before I go into the issues I have been having let me just say I would have canceled my service a long time ago if there was an alternative high speed internet provider where I live.

The first issue is my download speeds are about half of what they should be half the time. To be fair occasionally I get around the speeds I am supposed to be at. This has been an on going issue since I first started out with this service.

The other issue I have been having the last 3-4 months has been my service not working at all for one reason or another. Sometimes I call tech support and there is an automated message saying there is a maintenance going on in my area. Other times the message says there is an outage in my area. And sometimes there is no message at all at which point I talk to a "tech" (script reader) and all they can tell me is to reset my modem. Eventually it gets to the point where they offer to send someone to my house (no one ever shows up) and the issue seems to resolve its self for a few days then is back again.

Now that the technical issues are out of the way I have had some major issues with customer service. To be fair I called them a few weeks ago to tell them how disappointed I am with my service being out all the the time and the person was polite and gave me a month credit on my bill. I would advise everyone to get a credit on their bill when they are having issues. Maybe if they lose enough money they will get their act together.

Last Friday I called to set up a payment arrangement because my truck broke down and I needed the money to fix it. The person was polite and said they would note my account and my service would not be shut off. Saturday night my service was shut off. I called today and started trying to explain the situation to the person who was very rude to me and told me there was a note on my account but the person that put it there wasn't in customer service so it doesn't matter. At that point I asked to speak with a supervisor and was hung up on. I called back and after waiting on hold for another half hour finally got through to a supervisor. I explained the situation and they said they would have to transfer me to financial services. Another 15 minutes of holding. The person at financial services was polite and got my service back up for me. I then asked for a supervisor again to tell them how disappointed I was with this situation. In addition to that I told the supervisor I will be canceling my service as soon as I find service with another company. He didn't seem to care and had the attitude of "what do you want me to do about it". No offer of a credit on my account or anything. Not even an apology.

I pay over $80 a month for slow unreliable dsl and a phone line I don't even use but is required for my service. On top of that I get horrible (with a few exceptions) customer service and internet service. To contrast that when I lived in a bigger city I had cable service for $50 a month that was faster, more reliable and always up. Sorry for the long rant but my blood is boiling right now. If you have any other choice besides Centurylink I would advise you to take the other choice. Now that I have wasted my day on the phone with Centurylink I have to go to work.

I called them about 6 months ago after a co worker of mine who lives nearby signed up for service and got the same 10MB speeds I get (am supposed to get) with no phone line for half the price I pay. The rep said they would look at my plan and put me on hold. When she came back she told me I currently have the cheapest plan with that speed and getting rid of my phone line would not change the price. I swear some of these people cannot comprehend what you are trying to tell them. After going back and forth about it I just gave up and hung up. I may call them again about this but after what I went through today I have to calm down a bit before I try to call them back.

I called a local wireless internet company today to see if they have service where I live. The guy said there is no service in the town I live in. Then I brought up the stuff I was going through with Centurylink and he said he has many people from my area call him inquiring about service because they are sick of Centurylink. Maybe this company will eventually see it would be a good business move to offer service where I live. We have charter cable in town but for the 3 years I have lived here they have not put in internet service. If they eventually did I would drop Centurylink without a second thought.

Well I just tried the link you gave me. I put in my phone number and it gave me an error and told me to call customer service to complete my order. I already know where that will get me.

I tried to call and cancel my phone line multiple times to get my price lowered (like a co worker of mine that lives in the same town with the same speed, he pays half the price I do) only to be told by multiple people they can't do that and I currently pay the lowest price possible for the service. They also give me BS about how a phone line is required for the speed I get and I can only get the 3mbps package without a phone line. I swear some of these people get zero training or something. What do I have to do to get my price lowered? Cancel my service then sign up again or something?

I have the 10Mb and I pay a total of $45 which includes taxes.

I don't think CenturyLink offers a true dry loop. You can certainly get internet only as I have, but I still have a dial tone and could make an emergency call.

I guess you're best bet is to call again. Maybe you really need to cancel it for a week and then sign up again.

This is the reason why CL stays in business.

Well I signed up on the givemepure website as a new customer last night. It said customer service will contact me within 24 hours. So far no call. We will see what happens.

Read the fine print: "Rate applies to up to 1.5 Mbps High-Speed Internet service. "

And More ...

Looks like the lower prices apply to new customers only. I guess Centurylink doesn't care about it's existing customers. Can't say I'm surprised.

Did you see this? You have 10mb service, right?
