Re: You do not get an appreciation for how heavy a garage

I'm in the same boat, heard a bang the other night in the garage and one of my springs had let go. The door is original (30+ years old), rusting out along the button and buckling along the top where the garage door opener was installed by some jack wagon years ago in a less than professional install, so just going to have a pro replace it all.

attempting the DIY here

Heard a loud BANG the other night, sounded as if our overhead door was struck. The torsion spring must have gone (it's the original, over 10 years used).

It's a Wayne-Dalton Torquemaster and I found a supplier that will ship a spring to me; he even has a VERY extensive guide with pics to do the replacement. The spring is encased, should be safer than exposed springs... I'll find out soon.

I can't figure out why you just didn't call a local guy.

It may not be that easy to find a local guy who services Wayne-Dalton. I have read that they are safer to use and work on than regular openers so probably better for the do-it-yourselfer.

OK that's a reason.

Easy to locate and bring in a Wayne-Dalton tech... not so easy paying the truck roll AND full retail for the part. Besides it looks like a good learning experience... If I can do this I have 42 neighbors in this townhome community with the EXACT SAME item so this could be a quick cash opportunity down the line.

Torquemaster ROCKS!

It took just over one hour to replace the spring; one man job and it was incredibly EASY. Score one for Wayne-Dalton, their design is simple AND a snap to repair!

Re: You do not get an appreciation for how heavy a garage

And wouldn't you know it, I lost a spring again just a few minutes ago! As usual, it sounded like a small explosion going off in my garage. Luckily there were no cars in there at the time, and since I'm going out of town in a few days anyway, I'm in no particular hurry to fix this, so I'm going to take a bit of time to investigate alternatives. Although I've replaced these springs myself several times before, the existing ones are relatively new (they still look brand new), and having to replace them every few years like this is just getting old!
