[F@H] Hiatus over: V7 Beta Help

I changed three things:
Now folding on the strongest hardware in my home;
Using Windows 7 instead of Linux;
Folding with F@H client version 7 (beta)

My SMP numbers are WAY higher than previously obtained. However, my GPU numbers seem lower than they were before.

Anyone else using V7?
Got links to optimization/command tips that may squeeze a few folds per day out?

You have a passkey, yes? You configured the client to use that passkey, yes? If not, please do that. It will make a big difference in your credits once you complete 10 SMP2 WUs successfully, if you had not already done that.

Awhile back I think there were some adjustments made to try to make credits reflect work done a bit better. It will never be perfect, of course. So many variations in the WUs and in the equipment used for folding. They do keep trying, though.

What is your GPU? Could be a driver issue.

Nvidia GTX 560 ti. Using 301.42 driver with F@H 7.1.52. Too new?

I did forget my passkey when I started on Saturday but remembered before the day was out doh!

I did see at »foldingforum.org/ that those drivers do work for that card, myself, using an 550Ti I am still using the 285.62 drivers. My take is if it ain't broke don't fix it. YMMV, but maybe your passkey key fixed it? Also they(Stanford)claim any overclocking on some WU'S can cause issues.

I think it did, seems better now. I had to unbin and "normal-clock" my i5, running it at smp:2 to keep it around 65c. My gpu is full blast now at a nice frosty 67c It may have been the first batch of WU's I got as well, who knows, but it never ramped up to 100% on the first 2.

I don't like 70's... I know Sandy Bridge "can handle it", but the wallet is screaming "don't tempt fate".

The F@H Control panel thingy is very nice and user friendly. Kudos to Stanford.

Anyone else running v7 beta?

Good to hear it's better. The Ver.7 client is very user friendly and easy to setup. The wife runs it, I don't anymore on mine because it's now with the FP project and that needs Ver.6. 67c is a fine temp, mine runs 76 to 80c.

AFAIK, an i5 is a quad core, you should be running it as smp 4 so you the maximum benefit.

Unable to run it 24/7 at those levels. Even with unbinning my turbo boost down to stock levels, smp:4 is 8-12c from TJMax. I've burned up multiple procs by leaving them in the 90th percentile of their thermal envelope over extended stress periods. I need this puppy to make it to 4 years old.

Ambient temps are a disadvantage.

I had a very similar problem with my i7. A Corsair H2O cooler solved that! Recommended, if you have the space!

Dropped the temps, (running SMP-6, and one instance of uni-processor, and one (virtual) core for the ATI card) to 68C. VERY stable @ 4.3GHZ, and 20+ degrees below TJ Max.

Really tears up those a-4 WUs. Makes about 26,000 - 28,000 PPD, (including the GPU).

Something is not right...

Prime95 torture test took it to 94c (-5 TJMax) and it held for 15 minutes. WAY TOO HIGH ON STOCK SETTINGS!!! It didn't thermal throttle nor crash... but I don't like that. I would expect an overclock that is a little too aggressive to perform like that. Oddly, my voltage peaked at 1.336 and it is set to stock... I thought it peaked closer to 1.2???

I'm buying 2-3 80 cfm fans to add to the case, probably going to put them in the top and back exhaust and switch what's there to the side intake slots. This may not bode well with the wife who has to listen to it, but these fans are rated 10db below what is in there (though the hum from the turbulence inside the case is yet to be seen). Going to check the push-pins on the cooler as well, I've moved it around alot lately.

I'll measure the clearances and see if an H60 would fit. $20 more than a Hyper 212 Evo and kicks ass for cooling Future investment on the list for sure.

How much clearance did you need for your radiator/fan combo, rusdi See Profile?

Well, I won't "BS" you, it was a tight fit, but well worth the minor mods I had to make to the case. It is a ATX (full) form factor, media case.

Here's a link to the thread when I installed it.
»[F@H] Cool Running!!

Good luck!

EDIT: Those "push-pin" HSF hold downs for Intel chips are TERRIBLE! Worst design I think I have ever seen! You would think they could have thought it out a bit better, and come up with a more secure design, huh?

Well ain't that something!

Top left and bottom right push pins had the arrows pointing towards the heatsink (unlock position). Turned them and pushed, both clicked. So I did a re-seat on all 4. 71c after 4 hours of smp:4 and gpu folding with ambient between 24 and 25c. I'm gonig to run a P95 torture test tonight to see if that and 2 new fans really made a big difference (has so far in folding).

Oddly enough, with my non-K SnB proc, I can actually turn out a4 cores in roughly the same time by unbinning all 4 turbo boost and running smp:2 which cools it to a nice 56c (2 cores at 3.8ghz instead of 4 cores at 3.2ghz seems to chew through the a4's at the same rate???... perhaps I didn't let it run long enough to get a decent sample size)

Stupid push pins... I admit the failure is ALL ME, but I curse these arrows anyway.

Thank you signmeuptoo See Profile, I had read about this cooler before but people whom I know to be real always helps with positive reviews. I think the Hyper 212 is in the very near future, I will be ordering either at the end of this week or next due to availability of someone answering the front door I'm still not ready for water, not yet.

rusdi See Profile, wow! Great job on that case. That really looks sharp and polished.

Update: something is not correct with the latest BIOS from Asus on my P8P67 motherboard. Running Prime95 at stock... everything (including F5 default options load in UEFI) I hit 95c on the first pass and thermal throttle (CPU downclocks to 2800 mhz) into the second pegged at 99c. I decided to investigate:

vcore = 1.388
vid = 1.540
vccio = 1.050
pch = 1.100
cpu fan = 80%
case fans = 60%

???????? WHAT THE HELL!

First, why is my vcore EVER going over 1.165 volts? Why is my pch at 1.1? Why are my CPU and Case fans NOT at 100%!?!?

I installed that AI Suite II crap and found some interesting data points. It appears the "cpu temp" is the tcase instead of CPU 0 now.. booo! So I readjusted the FAN speeds for temps 20c below what they really are... 100% at 45c "CPU" temp while RealTemp is recording my cores all at 64-67c.

The vcore can not be set exactly, it is "offset" from a field I can not access. However using the AI Suite II for the P8P67 Deluxe board, I can access settings not available to me in the UEFI: like direct vcore. I lowered it to 1.100 and the pch to 1.050. Now I can fold overclocked 4 turbo bins and my vcore hovers around 1.158, VID is still 1.3 something...

This lowered temps to 67-69c while chewing through folds, it is eating up those a4 cores!

Anyone have an UEFI Asus board and now how to lock or set a max for VCore? I have to do it through software and remember to change it on every reboot... unless I'm missing something.

Might try loading "Optimum Defaults", then starting from the beginning, and bump up, 'till you get a nice stable balance between Temps, and speed.

I had to do this when I first set up my Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 board. (It has that UEFI BIOS).

Thanks rusdi See Profile. In searching for what the "Optimum Defaults" are and if my P8P67 LE has a vcore UEFI option (which it does not, blah!), I found a post in the Asus forums updating the 3602 Bios procedures:

"Please update Bios twice when update from previous Bios version, then need CLRTC."

I don't believe I did that when I flashed...

I will do this and then dig deeper into the UEFI. Hopefully this will control the automagic jump in vcore from 1.165 to a whopping 1.338 vcore under the slightest load a little bit, but if not, I'll keep looking for a way to undervolt the default.

1.338 vcore at stock clocks/settings is ridiculous, hopefully my err in updating this BIOS version correctly is the cause.

Anyway, I'm SMP:4 folding right now at 1.158 volts (through software undervolting using, well... an exploit in the AI Suite II software) at 67-69c. If I have to continue this way, so be it, I just hope I remember to set it at each reboot
