| [Asterisk] Asterisk maximum load ? I was wondering if anyone uses Asterisk for large deployments and can share their experience with high loads. The kind of things I am interested in: - approx server specs - number of registered extensions - number of simultaneous calls with / without transcoding - do you proxy the media ? - what happens if the numbers are exceeded (call drops, server crashes, etc) - any tweaking tips -- Providers: voip.ms, freephoneline, smartcall.ro through asterisk. Hardware: Vonage VDV21, Moto VT2x42, Linksys SPA series, Grandstream HT series, Panasonic KX-TGP5x0 »www.voipfan.net |

| reply to toro How long is a piece of string? To a certain degree I think that this is the sort of question where, if you have to ask....y'know?
This sort of question has been floated for as long as Asterisk has been around. Check the wiki at »voip-info.com, search for Asterisk scaling or dimensioning. |

Starting right from this statement, when is a deployment considered too large for Asterisk to stop being suitable ? 100 extensions ? Or 1000 ? -- Providers: voip.ms, freephoneline, smartcall.ro through asterisk. Hardware: Vonage VDV21, Moto VT2x42, Linksys SPA series, Grandstream HT series, Panasonic KX-TGP5x0 »www.voipfan.net |

Massive variables would include: system specifications, if it's running any other software, the complexity of your dial plan, ACD, ASR, etc. -- Wondering what I do? Find out at »www.digitalcon.ca Get your Obihai ATA in Canada. |

 | reply to toro This may be a rather clueless question.
But one way of dealing with "heavy metal" installations of VOIP is to use something like OpenSER (OpenSIPS now) on the front end, and keep asterisk for stuff like voicemail etc.
Essentially it keeps the majority of the SIP traffic off the asterisk server and has it only deal with media specific issues.
I may be out to lunch on this but it's something I remember being told. |

 | reply to toro I have a hotel on Asterisk 1.2 running with just over 1200 total extensions. Averages about 10,000 completed calls per week. To me, it's pretty darn scalable for a PBX. |

| Out of curiosity,
Does registration consume a significant amount of server resources?
Let's say I had a server(s) handling 1000 extensions on the same LAN, with registration not required. Could the same server with the same call volume handle fewer extensions, if they were all behind dynamic IPs, NAT, and required registration/NAT Keep Alive? |

 -- ...because I care. |

 | reply to Mango No. I have asterisk boxes with 2-3k registrations running about 6 PRIs worth of concurrent calls. -- I do not, have not, and will not work for AT&T/Comcast/Verizon/Charter or similar sized company. |
|
 | reply to toro You have to define "Large Deployment" because my definition of Large Deployment is probably not the same as yours. -- I do not, have not, and will not work for AT&T/Comcast/Verizon/Charter or similar sized company. |

| reply to toro Since only a few people have answered the question, I'll chime in.
- approx server specs: 1Ghz / 1GB RAM - number of registered extensions: 2 - number of simultaneous calls: 2 - transcoding: no - proxy media: no - if numbers are exceeded: the server will be o.k.
Disclaimer: I do not have a "large deployment". |

If it only serves local clients on a trusted network, security concerns are considerably reduced, especially if its a TDM system as may very well be the case for a hotel. -- Wondering what I do?
