unlikely 40 - 50% is in the best case their entire profit margin and in some cases if their price dropped that much they'd easily be losing money.

Phones are tied to carriers because of technology constraints and your carrier wants to keep you locked in, not the smartphone manufacturer.

You have little knowledge of hardware prices if you believe that and Apple is about the only company that gets a profit margin over 10-15% on their electronics on a regular basis.

And I did point out it is a win / win situation for them which is why they both enjoy it.
