bf15 join:2012-06-01 Mayodan, NC | does century link ever up their speeds I live in the rural area near sandy ridge NC.
On our main highway speeds of up to 10MBPS are there, but on at my house all we have is 512kbps. Im on a paved road with 4 homes within the first 500 yards of the road, however everything past us is farms with no homes, and it turns to dirt.
It has drastically altered my life from my move to here as Im a big gamer adn netflixer. now i cant game online, or watch netflix without havign to buffer every 10 min. |

| Depends, if you're serviced by a DSLAM I wouldn't hold my breath...I've been stuck on 1.5/256 since 2004. I'm close enough to get 10 MB which is offered from my CO but the remote I'm connected to doesn't have the bandwidth.
Also you didn't say how far you are from the central office or remote terminal, could be too far (the way the line runs not as the crow flies) from the DSLAM. Wiring is also a factor inside and out, perhaps someone here will chime in and can help you find out this information.
You can also go to your modem stat page and post the line stats here and it can help us determine if your line could handle more than 512 or not. -- 10,000/768 CenturyTel PPPoE DSL line (really 5,000/768 ) Now it's really 1500/256...again lol |

| reply to bf15 I don't know what you expected. You moved to a rural area. You think they will invest in upgrades just for the 4 homes around you? Doesn't sound like a good business decision to me. Either live in a rural area and accept the associated limitations or move. |

| True, but realistically, they will not upgrade those rural areas. Not when they can more easily and profitably upgrade the denser major city areas. It's the same reason why ATT Uverse and Verizon FiOS have halted expansion. It's already been decided what areas are profitable for upgrades. If they don't think they will see money in the future, it's not going to happen.
If it was you're business you would do exactly the same thing or risk not making any money. Just as if you were Verizon and you are making a killing in Moble 3G / 4G, expand on. And that's what Verizon is doing with their Home Fusion 4G: »www.pcworld.com/article/254900/v···day.html It's not an accident, or an idea that fell from the sky, it's just a profitable business decision. I I may not like it, but I can't blame them. It would be awesome for Verizon just to plow as much as they can and keep rolling out FiOS, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
While CenturyLink doesn't have a mobile division to invest in, they still will make the smart business decision to upgrade areas which they think are profitable. They know how to make a profit. That's what for profit companies are supposed to do, and wiring rural areas with upgrades aren't going to do that. |

I had 5/768 4 years ago until they realized they were massively oversubscribed and forcefully dropped everyone to 1.5 or below. Great company.......to poop on. |

Jammers join:2009-01-15 Tillamook, OR 1 edit | I know i'm about to jump ship with CLink. No speed increases here in over 4 years is getting ridiculous. I've had 10Mbps since about Jan 2008 and there hasn't been any upgrades since then and who knows when they will do an upgrade. |
|
 | I keep getting emails from them saying I can get more speed. Currently, I am on 5mb. But since they have so many problems delivering what I pay for, why bother upping the speed? |

covfam join:2012-03-05 Black River Falls, WI | reply to bf15 4 years ago , 1 bought a farm 5 miles out of town with the driveway connected to the highway. we previously got charter cable in town. before we bought the farm knowing ahead of time that we needed at least 1.5 mb internet speed.s we called up centurytel and were tols that there was 6 mb service at this farm. so we thought wow great. so we went down to to local centurytel office and asked the sales person again and even had her ask support if it was out there both she and the tech support said 6 mb is out there and the support tech said that its 6mb but we will get closer to 4.5 mb wich was more than fine with us. so we bought the house. we for the first 2 months got 2 mb wich was not what we ordered but enough for our needs. then they merged with embarq and all of a sudden our internet was downgraded to 512 kps "extended" dsl
so because of this we are moving to another farm on the edge of town that charter internet services. (we were even shown by the previous owners of the farm that it worked) but with centurytel, we were lied to and sold one thing and then got something massivly less. |
