IPv6 - World IPv6 Launch Day nears!

Yeah yeah, i Know! That topic again?!?

However, with the date almost here (June 6th 2012) - figured I'd ask if anyone heard any rumblings for OOL and IPv6. I know it's not so "needed" right now but being a network guy i'm already thinking about it at work so the thought crossed my mind.

Anyone seeing any RAs in router/modem logs? Saw some news or some rumblings anywhere?!? I know they must be doing some planning or even testing already. ISPs like AT&T and Comcast and even Time Warner already doing live tests in some form so guess i'm just hopeful Cablevision already have some plans (at least!).

I emailed them about it a couple days ago:

Is there any estimate as to when you will begin rolling out IPv6 support? I'm going to be moving to an area with optimum shortly, and I'd like to have native IPv6 connectivity.

Optimium:

Thank you for contacting Optimum Online regarding your question about IPv6 support. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and will be happy to assist.

At this point the Internet connection is supported by an IPv4 addressing scheme, no IPv6 option is available. When wide implementation of IPv6 occurs the Optimum network will be ready for it.

me:

Large numbers of companies are going to be enabling IPv6 on their websites in about a week: »www.worldipv6launch.org/participants/?q=1 . Comcast is in the process of rolling out IPv6 to most of their subscribers. Is that not wide enough implementation?

Optimum:

Thank you for contacting Optimum Online regarding your follow up about IPv6. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and will be happy to assist.

Rest assured your connection with IPv4 addressing will be compatible and allow your connect to the Internet to function properly and there will be a no issue for you using the service.

So, I get the feeling that:
A) They don't care
B) They are nowhere near the testing stage

I just think you're dealing with a front line support person who has no idea what's going on with the OOL network, other than what's on the script in front of them.

I don't think it's a reflection of what's under development.

When are you rolling out IPv6 on your work network?

Hmmm, seems CV using 6to4?

After seeing your post and rebooted the modem and plugged in my laptop and it pulled in the addresses.

I haven't set up any tunnels, this was directly from the laptop to modem, so seems CV creating them automatically or wtf? 0_o

Before any isp or any large corporation roles out ip6 on their networks, not including web servers, many security problems with ip6 have to be worked out. Till then enjoy ip4 it's not like ip6 is going to give you any extra speed. The latest and greatest in this case will not be the best for some time to come.

Anyone can use 6to4 with any IPv4 connection. That is not native service.

Well, it is June 6... my OOL is still working. I guess OOL did something right.

Why should any of us care about IPv6? As an end user, what benefit would I get?

SHoTTa35

@optonline.net

@Brad - I know anyone can do 6to4. I even had a tunnel setup with HE using DD-WRT before. My Linksys E4200 router's default firmware supports IPv6 in Native form and 6RD and the other to setup tunnels. I'm not using any of those at the moment so that's why I was shocked to see 6to4 running. I wasn't even using the router. Can Windows do it automatically? I know it uses Toredo to tunnel but that's not even a good way to do it. The network stats showed No IPV6 addresses (in Windows) but it was happily connecting to IPv6 sites so that's why I checked and saw 6to4 being used.

@A non - there is no real benefit just yet to end users. You will eventually need to have it as some websites will (yrs and yrs from now) only have IPv6 address so if you don't have one you can't reach it so easily. The other "benefits" depends on you as a user and how technical you are. NAT is a network limiting problem so with IPv6, that's gone and networking can become more straight forward. There are some obvious risks to that as well.

Fact is, we will all eventually need to get an IPv6 address as IPv4 addresses are running out, it is still a finite number and with more people having multiple devices, there wont be enough for the 7Billion people on the planet (currently only 2.8 Billion are connected with more being added all the time).

I'd sure hope that the chances of getting a static IP would increase.

Your chances of getting one now are already at 100%...just have to sign up for it as a business customer. Stop being cheap.

Anyway...

Before Cablevision can even start transitioning to IPv6, I thought their CMTSs had to support some sort of IPv6 implementation. I've read that Cisco is dragging its feet with providing updates or are forcing ISPs to buy new CMTSs in order to support IPv6. This explains why Comcast started their rollout with their Arris terminated regions and according to posts in their forum, has pushed their Cisco IPv6 rollout to 2013.

I looked up the CMTS my modem terminates to and it is made by Cisco.

Cisco here at home and work too so no IPv6 for us for a while at least!
