AT&T CEO says content provider will pay to NOT be in cap

AT&T's CEO claims that content providers are willing to pay AT&T to make sure their content is NOT included against any mobile cap. He calls it Toll-Free data(sort of like a 1-800 # on voice). I wonder if Netflix will take part after squeeling to FCC over such a possibility.

If tiered data pricing is stopping you from downloading to your heart's content, AT&T says there may be a solution.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said content providers want to pay for consumer access, which means "toll free'' data plans are a likely development in the next 12 months, FierceWireless reported today.

Stephenson said the plans would exclude certain types of content from counting toward a customer's monthly data allotment. He made the statement at an investor conference.

Stephenson said AT&T is already "getting those phone calls," from content providers, FierceWireless said.

Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile have also said they were considering offering toll free data plans, but haven't made any commitments to plans yet.

Good thing there is no net neutrality rules for wireless.

realistically there aren't any NN rules in the first place for anyone. Kind of like there is a law against jay walking but no one ever known anyone to ever gotten a ticket form doing it.

The point is that supposedly caps are for congestion relief. If all these companies pay to not count against the cap won't that cause congestion?

What's really stupid is that at&t pays ESPN so it's DSL and U-verse internet customers can have access to ESPN then ESPN is going to pay at&t to make sure it doesn't account against the cap?

I know several people who have received tickets for jay walking.
