 | [CenturyTel] CenturyLink finally can give me DSL Finally CenturyLink has brought DSL to my local. The fastest I can get from them is ADSL 7Mbps. Why can't I get VDSL 40Mbps??? I live at 11007 SE 227TH PL Kent, WA 98031. Currently I have a 35Mbps broadband connection from Comcast. |

 | reply to floydb1982 I'd triple staying with Comcast. |

 | reply to floydb1982 Hey there, Floyd.
Sorry to hear our faster speeds aren't available in your area. This is attributed to the fact that you're simply too far from any of our VSDL2 equipment which delivers those higher downloads. While we're always working towards expanding our coverage, there are still going to be pockets where we haven't yet. Comcast cable uses a different technology to deliver their internet service. Each can have its limitations, but in your case it may be best to stick with them until we're able to offer something better through our services.
If you have any additional questions, the quickest way to get an answer is to submit the information through our team's link here: »bit.ly/IArNlt.
Thanks!

NugzPremium join:2012-03-16 Ogden, UT | reply to CenturyLink Will Centurylink ever brake from this "to far from the magical box" statement. Or will 2030 come and they still use this same technology?
I think this is the only thing that holds this company back from being a true contender in the broadband ring. Either placing remote DSLAM's on every corner or changing the way the copper line assets are used is the only way. If not, then this company will have a wall of how big and how far they can make the company grow.
The day they quit telling us "sorry your to far away" will be a great day, until then. When they do say that, they act like it's our fault and we have to move.
ok fine I'll move, but to where? Is there a map of where all the CO's/DSLAM's are located? Nope we just have to guess and or call and get suckered into more things we don't want or need.

| reply to Nugz My guess is they are doing things the cheapest way possible they need to switch to fiber and be done with it like Verizon did. Cable is capable of it's faster speeds because it uses fiber optical cable. Cable is going to see 100 Mbps in the not so far in the future. Sure it will be expensive but if you have the wallet you can get it. What kills DSL is distance. Cable has no distance issues because it uses amplifiers to push the signal as far as it needs to go do the line. Too bad you can't amplifier DSL. |

 | reply to Nugz Nugz, Before accepting a management position within the executive offices, I worked in the DSL technical support center for about 8 years. So I'm all too familiar with having to deliver the occasional bad news that we cannot provide something my customer wants/needs. As I mentioned above, both technologies have their individual limitations, so I do empathize with your frustrations. If you'd like me to check any addresses for service availability moving forward, you can email the team I'm on and address it to me specifically.

Instead of ignoring/sidestepping the issue, Doug straightforwardly advised floydb1982 to stick with Comcast until CL is able to match that type of service. It will be everything you need, and it is constantly getting better!" -- "Careful, we don't want to learn from this!" --Calvin & Hobbes |

Very difficult for anyone to ignore or sidestep an issue that's very apparent to the OP. If the service level wanted is not there, it simply is not there. It wouldn't behoove any representative of any company to pull the wool over anyone's eyes on this kind of topic...especially on this forum.
Telling the truth on this topic doesn't do much to impress me. If someone at Centurylink were to fix my evening dog-slow speeds...then I'd be impressed. -- -------------------------------------------------------------- Centurylink DSL...my evening speeds are sooo bad, it's worse than when I had Hughesnet!! |

-Doug So you worked for Qwest or century before.
I know Qwest at times would be a weasel on what they could offer. Large company, many departments and some because of their high level management would be told to basically lie or stretch the truth. There was no such thing as no and if you told a customer that and it got back to management your job could be in danger. it was check back soon as we are always expanding our footprint. Cable was a shared line and Qwest was your own dedicated line. There was no such thing as speed issues or too far away. Worst case a bad employee needed a writeup for implying something wrong. Employees fault as DSL was never to be questioned. As said it varied by the department and its managers big time. As an outside field tech I had a writeup for daring to say the speed was not available without a new dslam being put in. Correct answer was we are always upgrading and it will be very soon. Second level even said that to keep the customer happy. It was all about appearance and not fact. Always sales not truth. Everyone is in smooth talking sales. You'll take the 7meg and love it. Soon you'll have the moon. |

Many DSL providers offer that explanation. Cable isn't faster because it uses fiber to the CMTSs, it's because of DOCSIS 3 which allows for channel bonding. I agree that cable doesn't have the same distance issues as DSL, but you can still theoretically attain 100Mbps on VDSL2, without bonding or vectoring. |

In my case, I have Comcast Business Class at my main home because it offers the best performing service.
Yet in another town where my secondary residence is, CenturyLink offers the best performing service so I use it there.
Go with whoever gives you the best performing service where YOU are. It makes no sense to do anything else. |
