Sadly, yes. Wireless is relatively cheap to deploy, and people have grown accustomed to paying high prices for wireless data, so there's a perception that the ROI will be good. Maybe, but, as usage goes up and people see wireless data charges start to climb, I think they are going to hit their spending tolerance limits pretty quickly. You're already seeing this happen, as folks resist buying more devices to add to their cellular plans, and that's why the carriers are moving to shared data plans. That will help for a while, but, if the value isn't there, consumers' appetite for wireless is going to decrease pretty quickly.
I think that the next big push for wired connections will be when we see more connected devices in the home. Security cameras, smart thermostats, appliances that monitor electric rates, etc. |
