Parents will have to monitor their kids spending

Parents will have to monitor their kids spending - imagine that.
quote:
parents will not only have to keep an eye on the number of text messages and phone calls{LOL - all plans are now unlimited. No one tracks phone calls} their children are burning through, but also the amount of video, music and games they are streaming over the cellular network.
Their kids know how to keep track. The new technologies don't bother them at all. And I bet they will know, if they are incentivized to, how much they are using. And that is where parents come in. Kids go over their limits - then TAKE AWAY THEIR DATA PLAN.

Not all phone plans are unlimited. I'm on the 700 minute plan, for example... »www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/plan···ge=share ...but it's probably true that kids these days don't make too many voice calls.

Kids didn't know how to keep track of their phone minutes when they were making phone calls. Kids must have unlimited text plans because there is no limited plan that can contain them. These reasons are why metered billing for bandwidth is probably a cash cow for carriers.

I haven't been following closely but I believe that both AT&T and Verizon require a minimal dataplan for all smartphone devices. The parent would have to take away the phone -- which carriers are betting is akin to capital punishment in contemporary American families.

Maybe people should actually raise their children instead of using smartphones, video games and other electronic devices as babysitters.

Frankly, I don't know any child that NEEDS a smart phone or even a regular cell phone for that matter. If they want one perhaps they should get a job and pay for it themselves? Of course that course of action might actually require parenting as opposed to giving them whatever they want so they leave you alone.

My agreeing with you in principle won't change the situation.

The carriers have thought of that, too. That's why an additional line is only $10. They've taken away a parent's excuse.

This is where I wish the government would step in, I know people hate government involvement with private business but really we need laws to force service providers to advertise the full out the door price at least on their website where entering your zipcode would let them know the rules for your location.

Well, if you agree with me why do you have any sympathy for the people who can't control their children? People who give them whatever they want without caveat or education as to what it costs? You honestly feel sorry for them? Where I'm from we call the outcome of such behavior a natural consequence.

When I was a teenager I ran the long distance bill up to a few hundred dollars using AOL and BBS'es. There were no local access numbers where we lived. Guess what happened? My parents took the modem away until I repaid that bill and agreed to pay all new charges going forward. Guess who carefully watched his usage after this hard learned lesson?

People need excuses to deny their children products that they don't need and won't appreciate? My Gods, however do kids survive in the 21st century? I grew up paying per minute long distance charges to talk to my friends and get online. None of us had cell phones. We had access to three channels (four on a good day) of OTA television because we couldn't afford satellite service and no had access to cable. In spite of all of these "hardships" my sister and I managed to grow up and live productive lives.

Really, I don't have any sympathy at all for someone who provides their child with a cell phone and refuses to attach any restrictions whatsoever to its use. They are the ADULT; if they can't control their CHILD they deserve to be soaked by their wireless carrier.

You can blame the Government for the former and in many cases (911 charges, USF fees, regulatory compliance charges, gross income surcharges, etc.) the latter.

My State decided to impose a "revenue surcharge" on all regulated (POTS, gas, water, electric) utilities in the state. I guess "revenue surcharge" sounded better than "tax increase". In any case, guess what the utilities did? They passed this cost along to their customers as a line item and explained that all of the money collected was going to the State's General Fund.

What? You want them to be honest with their customers? But.. that would cut into their profits.

Remember this motto (from a particular movie).. "What is best for the company?"

I liked the Disney Mobile idea. The parents have all the control of their childs phone.

So, with the smartphone idea, the parents could allocate X amount of minutes, data, and texts to a particular cell phone. Once they go over, oh well.

Verizon already offers such a service. They even make it possible for the kids to still call home/relatives when the usage allowance is exhausted.

Once again for only 4.99 per line...

Shucks, you mean they expect to be PAID for providing a SERVICE to their customers? The nerve! The unmitigated gall! Where are the torches and pitchforks when you need them?

Seriously though, control your kids or pay $4.99/mo. Some of us can manage to do the former without relying on Verizon. Let's call the $4.99/mo a fair price to pay for people who need to rely on others to babysit their children because they lack the backbone to do it themselves.

Why waste your time tracking something that has virtually no costs.
Just the cost to have a network ready to support your phone when you want to use it makes your usage insignificant.
Companies just need to start basing their monthly fees on actual costs and stop trying to get bonus money base on usage that adds nothing to the cost.

1st, I don't accept your premise that there is no cost involved. And I live in the real world where they will charge for overages, whether I think they should or not. So, for us in the real world, we will track usage and the kids will have to as well.

They have to pay to build the network if you use it or not just in case you do. Just because you dont use your connection much does not make it magically free.
Billing by data usage went away in 1995.
They are only bringing it back to bilk customers out of more money.
Customers need to fight the BS.

Sprint is the only one who has not started to bilk customers out of more money for actually using the connection the customer already paid for.

Its even the same thing with your minutes (voice is just data). Companies have offered free nights and weekends forever. They do that so they can get business workers to pay more for unlimited plans just to get more money from them. That money from day usage is just a bonus for the company as everyone already pays more than enough to cover the cost of the network in their monthly fees no matter how much they use their phones.
