| Really, this is not the thing that a B&M store will sell much of, even in Manhattan. By definition, people who want IP phones are already heavy internet users....they'll buy online. Sure, there are business phone system dealers, but they focus on the systems they sell (Avaya for example) and they're not too focused on selling one phone to a private customer. Amazon has the C610A-IP for $ 94 including free shipping. » www.amazon.com/Solution-Accounts···04SBDQMGThe Amazon page has several reviews. Or you can pay $ 110 here also with free shipping: » www.101phones.com/details/41631/···-ip.html----------------------------- The C610A-IP: The [A] means it has an answering machine, my own preference is to use CallCentric's voicemail.... And make sure it says [IP] when it comes to Gigaset, otherwise you are getting the analog version. |

 | They appear to be ineligible for in-store pickup.

| Indeed, the J&R listings (except for Ooma) either say phone/online only, or are out of stock altogether.
Folks buy these things online. That's one reason that Best Buy is dying, Circuit City already died....
Staples has never gotten much into VoIP.
Wal-Mart usually has some Skype stuff behind the motor oil and cooking oil.
I guess Fry's is good but it does not exist around here. And PC Richards has high prices.
Silo and The Wiz are both gone....
Online is where it's at.
--------------------
The great tragedy is that Radio Shack could have been HUGE (sorry Donald Trump) selling computers, cellphones, VoIP....
....but they did not effectively followup after the "Trash-80".

| Advantages of B&M: 1) to keep the money in the community, 2) not to pay shipping and have to be at home when Fedex comes and 3) to be able to rely on consumer protection and Small Claims Court.
Examples. 1) I once had a reconditioned Dell PC shipped to me. It was supposed to come with Microsoft Word; it did not. I complained to Dell but got no satisfaction. Nothing more I could do. 2) I bought my first ATA from a local supplier and it did not work. I tried to return it but they refused. I filed a Small Claim complaint. The supplier wrote to me asking me to bring in the ATA for a full refund. Now we are friends. I wish they had IP phones but they don't.
btw spelling is "mortar" not "morter". I'm so embarrassed and I'm going to have to live with this for the rest of my life. |

Wozniak had a prototype Mac with a 5.25 twiggy drive on ebay for 100k. (It didn't sell.) Sotheby's is currently auctioning a functioning Apple I motherboard (1 of only 6 known) for an anticpated price of 180K or better. Keep that TRS-80 in good working order.... |

| reply to steve1111 I bought a Gigaset C610a-IP but I returned it. It was not difficult to assemble the phone but I was unable to configure it to place a Voip call. I found the technical instructions that accompanied the phone to be insufficient. I phoned up Gigaset's Technical Support. The representative was polite and tried hard hard to guide me through the steps but she concluded that some of the software pertaining to Voip that should have been installed had not been installed.
Thank you Bestbuy. Bestbuy ordered the phone for me to pick up and then refunded the money without making a fuss.
The lesson I learn from this is the importance of buying equipment from a local brick and mortar store so that one can get a refund if the merchandise is unsatisfactory.

 | said by steve1111:I found the technical instructions that accompanied the phone to be insufficient. IMO, it's unrealistic to expect a complex electronic product to include a hefty paper manual. That adds significantly to manufacturing and shipping costs, wastes trees, and becomes obsolete with the first firmware upgrade. The manual, 236 pages, is here: »gigaset.com/medias/sys_master/A3···S_CA.pdf .
If you suspected that your unit's firmware was corrupted, IMO you should have tried resetting the base and (if sufficiently alive to be accessed via the web interface or from a handset) loading the latest firmware. If that didn't help, before giving up, I would have asked for a replacement. I don't know how many units are DOA, but Gigaset has a good reputation for quality and I'd expect it to be much less than 1%. |

Respectfully, IMHO it is just as likely (if not more so) that the representative's knowledge was not adequate to the task.
Also, in the event that the firmware was incomplete or corrupted, she should have been able to get you to a website for a new (or updated) copy of that firmware for download.
As for instruction manuals that come with IP phones, those are useful for very basic setup, but are not useful at all for configuration with specific providers unless the phone is pre-configured for such.
I think there is a good chance that if you had asked for help here in this forum, and/or from the VoIP provider, the problem would have been surmounted.

Buy from stores that have VoIP in their blood, so that you'll get satisfactory merchandise to begin with. |
