Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | [Photos] Transmission replacement How it looked when I picked it up in MA | Powder coated the transfer cover plate and painted the rear driveshaft output | took some blasting media to it | This afternoon |
Transmission in my 97 Outback finally was on it's last leg.. I picked up the car without 5th gear and it seems like they never put gear oil in it.. long story short and over a year later it started going downhill but not in a bad way.. I had lot's of warnings but after flushing the transmission 3 times (4 qt of 75-90W) is not all that cheap after 3 flushes. after the 3rd and it holding fluid that was enough.
So long story short I was getting gas one morning and car came to a violent stop but I was able to still move.. the dmage was a crack in the case which drained the remaining fluid I had, and it turned out to be some bearing but it might be from the pinion gear right above the ring gear that it might of fell between that and the case.
So I picked up a 98 Forester transmission with 86K I just finished with all my prep work in which I'm about to install it tomorrow -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | yes it was sealed.. I wonder if this threads is going to be like the last one? I was debating about waiting until it was done and wait for all the comments to pour in. |

| reply to Subaru It always bothers me when people replace something major like this and don't clean it up any. It looks like you're off on the right foot. We all know the cleaner it is the better it works!
I never did anything major like trans work on my Subaru but it looked like an easier job than it is in other vehicles. All the bolts looked more accessible than on other cars. -- John M - Cranky network guy |

Trudge on and post pictures.....Ya do nice work and we like seeing the reults! The cool thing was when I was working I had two different people walking past who stopped and said they were amazed on the work I was doing, today is just mounting it back up.. I already have a buyer for the viscous center differential I will do the tear down once I get everything in order. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

I never did anything major like trans work on my Subaru but it looked like an easier job than it is in other vehicles. All the bolts looked more accessible than on other cars. Yeah the cleaner it is the better it is to find and spot leaks later.. and just to have on hand I picked up the whole seal kit for the transmission from my local dealer about $40 worth.
but yeah the Subaru 5 MT is about 125 lbs (will weigh it today to be sure) and it's really simple to take in and out.. Having said that I will be replacing the transmission mount.. at 237K it has a bunch of flex.
But the best part is providing to make sure you match your FD Ratio I can use any transmission from any year up to current.
I'm right now trying to locate a clutch based LSD that Subaru had back in the late 80's before they switched to the VLSD.. they are a bit harder to find and a clutch rebuild I don't think many dealers carry the rebuild kit now. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

Anyway are you replacing the engine rear oil seal while the trans is out? How about the clutch too? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

Subaru1-3-2-4Premium join:2001-05-31 Greenwich, CT | reply to MEDIAN2k3 The engine was fun transmission was not bad it's just a few little parts that you need to get to.
My clutch is not a year old yet but checking it out it has a lot of life left. I did take my old transmission apart and I see what happened.. the bearings from the main bearing is fell apart which is near the rear part of the case.. It pretty much got stuck under a gear and some of it floated all the way to the front.
Also I saw why I never had 5th gear and that's because it's clean shaven off. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!

Disapointed I did not get to put in the front LSD at the same time while it was out.. but it's not that hard to drop it after a 2nd time. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!
