Ultra TV: Slow UI

I'm over at my sisters today and noticed that her Ultra TV UI is horrid slow. Rebooting all devices helps some what but still hitting the grid button can take up to a minute before the grid comes up.

Is this typical? Before the reboot I waited 5 minutes and the grid still was not up. It started making the picture small but nothing came up in the grid spot.

Sometime mine is slow coming up but 50% of the time when it comes up i only see the channel number and icon and the time at the top, everything else is blank. If i wait a bit it might come up or i have to hit zoom and start over again.

Sometimes it takes a few trys and is a pain. Otherwise i like Ultra Tv.

Thank you! I did not know about the zoom button. I will let her know. That makes it more usable (although you should not have to do that).

This would most likely be some sort of communication issue between the media player and the gateway. As far as guide data and VOD data goes, it's all stored on the hard drive of the gateway, so if the media player is having communication issues with the gateway, it could cause that information to load slower than usual. It also could possibly be an issue with the hard drive in the gateway. My suggestion would be to have a technician take a look through all your wiring and go from there.

I've seen the slow UP on both of my players. Its not just the guide. Search, recorded programs list, DNLA list, guide,....

On player is about 10 ft from the gateway on a bran new cable.

The thing that I find weird is when the guide will just go black for a second for no reason. If it were close to a 1/2 hour break is would make since but thats not the case. It seems totally random. If I ever spot a pattern I'll post about it.

Hi Dan,

I moved my gateway so it's as close to my media players as possible (from a wiring length standpoint). I'm still having significant lag in the UI, particularly the grid. What is the best way to check signal strength between the gateway and media players? I'd like to gather as much info as possible before resorting to paying for a service visit.

Thanks.

There's no easy way to check the strength between the players and the gateway.

One common problem I've seen with these systems is IR interference. Can you try testing with the remote directly touching the front of the media player, to see if that responds any faster than where you would normally use the remote?

Mine has been slow since the install day. And I use quad shield rg6 cable inside my house.

I figured it was a firmware issue that was going to be resolved at a later date.

In my den. My player is about 8-10 cable ft from the gateway. I sit about a foot from the player.

Its gets laggy and slow with no describable pattern.

Search can be horrid. Some days its quick and easy other days its will sit for a minute or two before I can select the 1st letter and then a minute or so for the next 2-3.

The media player reacts to the remote press right away, Its the gride guide that sometimes comes up black and you have to wait or try over again to get it to completely load the guide programs.

Or the grid guide comes up fast but then turns black after a second and you have to wait sometimes 5 or 6 seconds for it to show everything again.

Is it only the grid guide you experience this problem with? Does it also happen on the regular guide (channels card in the menus)?

For me it happens for anything I use the remote for. Changing channels, moving to a different feature (dvr, home connect), or browsing the guide... or even bringing up the guide or changing to live TV.

Every button I press on the remote registers with the box. It just takes a couple seconds to actually do what I want it to do. So if I press the channel up key and it doesn't do anything so I press it again and again and again.. it will change the channel multiple times according to how many times I pressed the button.

Right now it's my biggest gripe with the system. My second biggest gripe is that my Harmony One remote still doesn't have a solid keyset download for the system so right now I have to use two remotes. My harmony one controls my blu-ray player and the cable remote controls everything else.

My Harmony 676 works great with it. I had no problem finding the online profile to load into it. It is listed as "Arris MP2000NA PVR" in the Harmony database.

It seemed to only be when using the grid guide, the other menue was working fairly good,

Now the past two days even the grid guide has been working better, not taking as long to show the programs now.

Have a good day.

I have to say, we have reached our limit with WOW Ultra! We have rebooted everything over 100 times since we got the service in early May. We have had techs come out and we have had firmware upgrades and everything else. The grid guides work about 60% of the time. The current listings are always blank. It takes forever for channels to change. The internet goes out or disconnects on a daily basis. The picture freezes constantly. This morning I couldn't even do a speed test because of a server problem. Last night we had no service at all for several hours. We called and they said there was an outage but had no specifics. I have had WOW since they came to Naperville but I have had enough!

this is definately one of my biggest gripes. the lag is especially noticable if you pick a channel from the grid guide. the tuner tunes in the upper right box fairly quickly but there is ALWAYS some strange 5 second period by which it won't expand to full screen. this is made even worse when friends and family think they need to hit "zoom" to get the channel to zoom only to have that zoom the grid back in 10 seconds later. there cannot be any way WOW doesn't know the UI does not meet real world expectations for usability.

remote issues is a poor excuse. i have remotes from 15 year old TVs that work fine to this day on incredibly old batteries.

In the "MoCA>>Advanced" tab in the web UI, do the "mocaNodeRxPower" entries measure the signal strength between gateway and players? What is preferred lower limit? I'm showing -35 right now.

Thanks.

Just as a follow up to my previous post, here is some more info from the MoCA-Advanced screen:

 mocaNodeRxPackets.6.2     20048347
 mocaNodeRxCorrected.6.2   13553
 mocaNodeRxDrops.6.2       0
 ...
 mocaNodeRxPackets.6.0     62674218
 mocaNodeRxCorrected.6.0   46973
 mocaNodeRxDrops.6.0       5

Are the "corrected" and "dropped" entries a sign of a poor MoCA connection?

Not necessarily a poor connection. I have similar statistics on my system at home, and I've wired everything myself and don't have many issues with it. I'm still not entirely up on MoCA, so I will try and get more information on what these numbers mean, as I'm not entirely sure myself.
