Free Antivirus Comparisons

After years of paying for NIS I'm going to jump ship to a free AV software. The cost to buy the software for all of my PCs (six total) is getting expensive.

So... I have my choices of free software. Avira, Avast, AVG, and MSE.

Of those four... which would you choose if you had to load a free AV right now?

Avast- hands down the best of breed for free antivirus protection. have used it for years and have never had better luck elsewhere.

Exclude AVG from that list..........or you'll regret it.

Avast is the best right now with more protection.

Seems that Avast is offering their paid security suite for a good chunk of the money off for those upgrading from the free version to the paid version. Interesting.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I don't need that.

The free version is sufficient ,but don't just depend on an AVP .........have a layered defense in place.

Funny... AVG free is used by more people than Avast, it is consistently getting better and is even at the top of the list in the pc world article.

Personally I've been using AVG since 2005 and have never had an issue.

Your later statement to go with a layered defense is absolutely correct.

One of the most important parts (and is included with AVG Free) is a link scanner.

While Avast does include sandboxing they try it apply it to every program they are not familiar with which breaks a lot of things. This drives users nuts trying to learn how to disable it fora particular program. Personally I prefer Sandboxie and only apply it to the webbrowser when needed. (Sandboxed software cannot be updated from inside the program.)

In the end being careful and vigilant about where you go, what you click, and what you install is more important than any piece of security software. A link scanner, email scanner, and sandboxing can certainly help.

Your ant-virus should be the last line of defense not your first.
Your BRAIN and habits are your first line of defense.

That's cause the techs that sell computers get a payback from Grisoft to put it on every bloody computer.

Grisoft pays out more than any other company for fake awards and recommendations than any other company.

99% of machines that I fix because of infections run AVG.

With Avast or Avira installed after along with some other defenses,I hardly hear from the same customers.

I was a huge believer in Avast, but I ran into too many problems with some of the other things I run on my system, so I've been trying another AV of late. My feeling is that I either will go back to MSE or try Avira, which I haven't used thus far. I also have not used AVG so cannot speak to that one, but I don't think you can go wrong with any of those you've mentioned. Try them and see how they work.

I use OpenDNS for DNS and they have been pretty good at blocking the bad domains. I don't use Internet Explorer so ActiveX isn't a problem.

I am neutral but why don't you download and install some of the FREE antivirus programs and try them?

I'm neutral, as I said.

I run Avast on my Windows 7 laptop and have my router's DNS set to OpenDNS. What else should I be doing to keep this PC free of viruses, malware, etc?

Try Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, SuperAnti-Spyware and SpywareBlaster.

Others may add to this list.

I don't know... sometimes I wonder about folks west of the river..

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded and ran scans with all of them. Any other advice for security and hardening the OS?

Some day you might consider the lifetime version of the first two programs. They do the job while you relax safely.

Yes, I'm west of the river.
