SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | MobileMe-iCloud conversion (or lack thereof) I have an old MobileMe account that I have not converted to iCloud. I have since left Apple and migrated to Windows 7, Amazon MP3 store, and Android-based devices.
I know MobileMe is ending soon and when I logged in after months of non-use, a screen popped up prompting me to convert to iCloud. I declined to do anything.
What happens to my old MobileMe/iTunes account should I do nothing and the conversion window expires? I have all my purchased AAC files on my physical PC and backed up at this point... anyone know? |

Everything is outlined there. Your best bet is probably signing up for the email-only transition so you can at least keep your address and not have to deal with changing your AppleID.
Purchased music will continue to work as the AppleID/iTunes account is separate from MobileMe's account. Just make sure you keep the email address active or add a new one where you can receive mail. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | Thanks for the link. I'm not sure I'll bother switching over for that email address.... everything is now through my gmail account and there were only a few junk messages in that mobileme email address.
Since all my iTunes music was purchased as DRM free AAC files, nothing is tied to that account. And I never bought movies or shows through iTunes. I figure if for whatever reason I decide to go back I'll make a new iTunes account with my new gmail address and not leave it tied to an iCloud account. Unlikely as it may be that I will return... |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | reply to Thinkdiff Is there really any legitimate reason I should keep that account active? Or anything else I haven't thought about in this situation? |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | Yeah, I used to have multiple iDevices until Apple dropped support for iCloud for Core Duo Machines. Then it was upgrade my Mac or lose functionality with services. In a fit of rage, I dumped everything and went PC/Android. I doubt I'll be back, but you never know.
I had thought about keeping that MobileMe/iCloud account with my Win7 PC, but since there appears to be no legit reason to keep it open, I'll let it lapse and start a new iTunes account if/when I need one.
The iPad is still best of breed and priced competitively for what it is... though the Asus Transformer Prime is a worthy contender. I'm not looking to start a flame war... just pointing out that if I did go the way of the iPad... then obviously I'd need to open an iTunes for that. |

 | reply to SwedishRider Just a thought re keeping the email account active. It is easy to create email aliases for one-time use. Create on, use it, and when done, delete it. Great for avoiding spam from a party that makes you info available without your consent. The aliases convert/go to your MM account, but only you know that. They bounce when you delete the alias. |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | reply to SwedishRider After thinking it over, I ended up converting it over to an iCloud account... it didn't cost me anything and it's already an established account- why not I guess..
I have always thought the iPad and the subsidized iPhone are competitively priced for what they are... my gripe is with the cost of Macs and the timeframe Apple used to abandon them for support.
Down the road, I would consider an iPad and maybe an iPhone linked to my Windows PC. I don't think I'll go down the road of a Mac again... they're just too overpriced to be told,"Sorry, upgrade or your services with no longer work on your 4 year old machine." I'm much more leery of vendor "lock-in" than I was before... DVDs and paper books for me until they become platform independent.
Mail in iCloud is pretty crabby with Thunderbird for Windows. I ended up just forwarding all mail to my Gmail account. Seems there is some incompatibility in there somewhere. |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | reply to Thinkdiff Just out of curiosity, how good is the sync between Google and the iPhone? I researched is and it appears that you can establish an Exchange connection between the two to sync mail, contacts and calendars. I have no intent to use iCloud as my primary sync mechanism anymore.
But how good/poor is the exchange-like sync between iPhone and Google? |

ThinkdiffPremium,MVM join:2001-08-07 Bronx, NY kudos:6 | I don't use Google for anything but spam email addresses, so I can't comment on their Exchange implementation.
But I run my own mail server that has an Exchange-like interface similar to what Google does. The iPhone integrates perfectly with it. Calendars, meetings, contacts, and emails all push nearly instantly. Not much more to say, because everything just works as you'd expect. I would hope Google's exchange implementation is as good on the server side, so you should have no issues syncing on the iPhone. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

If Google's exchange sync works well, then I would certainly consider an iPhone for my next upgrade. I think iPhone is competitively priced for what it is, and it would sync much easier for music than my DROID3 did. Syncing music on the Droid was a minor pain (unless everything was streamed using Google Music, which killed bandwidth caps).
Interestingly, my work uses Windows 7, iPhones, and iPads. I would have the same setup they use.
Like I said before, my gripe was with Macs, shortened EOL schedules, and dropped support for services. If I kept Google as the central sync point and used Apple hardware for mobile and a PC for my main work, I could have the best of all worlds.... time to ponder... |

SwedishRiderRider on the StormPremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | reply to Thinkdiff Question: Can you sync multiple Exchange servers to one iPhone with iOS 5? I ask because if I were to go iPhone I would need to use Google Sync, which is one Exchange account, and my work account which is also Exchange.
I've read that you can with the latest iOS, but want to confirm that. |
