Yet, Norton still performs background tasks:
Are there other background tasks that can be turned off so Norton never performs them? -- »Music2pc-This program is AMAZING! |

They should not be interrupting your work, and they should immediately cancel when you use the mouse or keyboard. Do you have the idle time out option set to a high value, such as 30 minutes? If you set the idle time out so high that some tasks - such as the idle time quick scan - never have a chance to run, then they will eventually run anyway during non-idle time. That may be why they are interrupting you instead of running while you are not using the computer. Some background tasks do need to run, so you might have more success by setting the idle time out to only one minute, so that these tasks can get started immediately and complete while you are away from the PC. |

Sometimes when I go to quit them, my computer completely freezes up my advice would be to not try to stop the "backgroud tasks" when it runs and then your computer won't freeze up when you do that..
the "background tasks" may just run on a schedule even though you have it set to not do anything when it runs.. so, unless you can find a way to stop the "background tasks" from running at all, i guess you should just let it run..
p.s. i am surprised to see that "norton security suite" includes functions like removing temporary internet files, useless regkeys, etc.. |

1 edit | reply to fonzbear2000 The screen shots below show how all of my PCs are setup to use Norton's background tasks:

I have never noticed it running except during idle times, and it has never interfered with the operation of any of my PCs.
I don't allow clearing of internet access history, because, while some consider the history function to be a privacy issue, I consider the automatic deletion of that history to be a security issue.
I don't allow Norton (or any utility) to make the decision of what registry entries are "broken".
You may want to try disabling the "Idle Time Optimizer" as shown in the screen shot below to see if that helps with your situation (if it is not already disabled):

 | Thanks. The idle time opt. was on so I disabled it. Hopefully that will make a difference. -- »Music2pc-This program is AMAZING! |

Hopefully that will make a difference. the Norton Task Notification is another administrative setting that you may want to try disabling (just in case it is the task notification popup itself that is causing you a problem because of some software conflict in your PC).
