Flashing Tomato to Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router fails

I have two of these buffalo WHR-HP-G54 routers. No matter what browser I try, I can not get tomato to install. In fact trying to upload buffalos OWN BRAND of firmware update results in the same error message as tomato. "Invalid firmware REBOOTING".

I have tried both trying to install using the login through the browser and by the whr install thing in the tomato folder.

What could be going wrong? I tried everything I know. I need to use these to receive signal from an AP unit and the default firmware wont let me but I heard tomato allows these to be used as a client bridge to receive signal like wifi cars in a laptop.

How many of the flashing instructions from the install folder did you skip ? I have litererally flashed over 1,000 buffalo radios. The LinkSys TFTP tool seems to give best results.

If yo think you followed all the steps then post the results of each one, and I'll point you to your error.

I had to set my computer up with a different static ip address to get the router to recognise the update.

Here are the steps I followed. I downloaded the version 1.28 from the tomato website. It said to:

quote:
Push and hold the reset button on the router for a few seconds to reset the configuration.
Plug your computer directly to the router. This will not work over a wireless connection.
Set your computer's ethernet card settings to: IP=192.168.11.2, mask=255.255.255.0, gateway=192.168.11.1.

In Windows, you can set this by going to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click your ethernet card, click Properties, then select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click Properties, click "Use the following IP address". You can leave the DNS settings blank.

Make sure the red diagnostic light isn't lit on the router, unplug the power cable to the router.
Double-click on the whr_install.bat file.
Re-plug the power cable to the router.
There's only about a 5-second window between when the router looks for a new firmware and when it gives up and loads the current firmware. If it doesn't work, unplug, the router, wait a few seconds and try again.
After uploading, wait. It still needs about 2 minutes to flash the image.
Reset your computer's ethernet card settings back to use DHCP.

In Windows, you can set this by going to Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click your ethernet card, click Properties, then select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", then click Properties, click "Obtain IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

The default router address after installing Tomato is 192.168.1.1. TFTP-based upgrades will also use this address and will follow the whatever setting you enter in the GUI.
Make sure you're entering the username "root" and password "admin". Unlike the default firmware, they are required in Tomato.
A complete reset of the router after installing Tomato for the first time is recommended. Go to Administration/Configuration then under Restore Default Configuration, select "Erase all Data in NVRAM (thorough)", then click OK. When the router restarts then you can go into the Configuration and makes any changes that you need to.
I reset the box and then plugged it into the computer and then into the port labeled 1 on the router.

Here is a screen capture of the rest of the process on my windows 7 computer.

Do us a favor, please, and upload the AVI directly. No need to push traffic through a spammy site like that.

No offense intended. As I said, the hosting site was spammy - "Sign up here, click here" etc. I did not mean to imply that your content was. You can upload the file directly.

Thanks.

The only think I could deduct from your video is that you used "CAM Studio" to make it. The quality was awful.

When you download Tomato firmware, it includes a file named "whr_install.bat". Is the file that you are running ? Did you read and follow each step exactly ? Did you make sure the tomato.trx file was in the same folder as this batch file ?

Did you default the buffalo to factory defaults which gives it an IP address of 192.168.11.1 ? Did you set your computer network card IP address to be 192.168.11.2 ?

If yes to all of the above, are you connecting the computer to the buffalo using a network switch instead of a direct cable ? If not, then use a network switch, not a direct cable. At this point you should get ping responses from 192.168.11.1 and are ready to run the whr_install.bat file ( follow every step from the beginning like a robot ).

If still no joy, turn OFF the Windows 7 firewall and disable any other network adaptors in the system, such as wireless NICS. There will be no viral risk since you are only connected to the router via the network switch.

I'll show you the alternate method using TFTP.EXE if the above does not work. I've had a couple stubborn ones that would not take it from the batch file.

Edited - Added strikes after finding your more detailed post.

What is a network switch? I plug one end into the ethernet port and one end into port 1 on the router.

The thing was reset many times but I did it before trying this. Sorry cam studio made it a huge file size so I shrunk it and then it looked bad. I simply unzipped the folder and left everything in the folder and then clicked on the whr install. Nothing was taken out of the folder. The firewall is turned off.

What is a network switch?

It is a device to connect multiple devices together. It will prevent your network card from having to initialize, check for internet and decide if everything is cool before it allows any packets to flow.

»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···33156066 is a specific model I can vouch for as a decent unit.

»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···33181115 is a premium brand that looks way too in-expensive to be true. I've never used that particular model since I always buy the cheaper but adequate stuff, but it is the one I would certainly recommend you get.

The odds of this fixing your snag are over 90%. The odds of getting TFTP to work without it are under 10%. If you have an older Windows XP computer handy then you would have much better luck at making it work with no switch since it has much less initial overhead when the NIC is connected than Winders 7 has.

Edit - Since you have two of these Buffalo routers, and these routers have built in switches, you do not need to purchase a new switch.

Try this ;

1 - Change one of the Buffalo routers to have an IP address of 192.168.11.78

2 - Connect the router to be flashed ( still having an IP address of 192.168.11.1 ) to the other buffalo, port 1 to port 1 with a network cable. With another network cable connect your computer to either of ports 2 - 4 of the buffalo that has the IP address 192.168.11.78. Disconnect power from the buffalo to be flashed ( the one with 192.168.11.1 ), but power to the other buffalo will remain "on" for the entire process.

3 - Let everything sit like that for about 60 seconds, and then run the batch file again, picking up after the step telling you to dis-connect power.

P.S. If you have any "Internet Security Suite" or other fancy 3rd party firewalls, be sure they are disabled.

Yeah I put the cable in that goes to the new router in the buffalo router and it blew up. I feel just peachy that trying to save 50 bucks I blew up a router I could have sold for 30 bucks on ebay. Not to mention wasted another week. Sometimes its best to just spend the money.

It's been a while since I last flashed one using TFTP. Here is a batch file that I used.

@echo off
echo ===========================================================================
echo This batch file will upload dd-wrt.v24-9370_NEWD_openvpn.bin in the current directory to
echo 192.168.11.1 during the router's bootup.
echo.
echo * Set your ethernet card's settings to:
echo      IP:      192.168.11.2
echo      Mask:    255.255.255.0
echo      Gateway: 192.168.11.1.
echo * Unplug the router's power cable.
echo.

echo Press Ctrl+C to abort or any other key to continue...
pause > nul

echo.
echo * Re-plug the router's power cable.
echo.
echo ===============================================================================
echo Waiting for the router... Press Ctrl+C to abort.
echo.

:PING
ping -n 1 -w 50 192.168.11.1 > nul
if errorlevel 1 goto PING

echo tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put dd-wrt.v24-9370_NEWD_openvpn.bin
tftp -i 192.168.11.1 put dd-wrt.v24-9370_NEWD_openvpn.bin
if errorlevel 1 goto PING

echo.
echo ===============================================================================
echo * WAIT for about 2 minutes while the firmware is being flashed.
echo * Reset your ethernet card's settings back to DHCP.
echo * The default router address will be at 192.168.1.1.
echo.

pause

That was the file he used. The "Blow - Up" was himself, not the radio. If the radio actually did blow up then it was factory defective to start with and that would certainly explain the difficulties. That model has been dis-continued for a few years already. Remember all those thousands of radios I flashed ? Well, there are only two or three still running. They do not age well. Especially with a 12V Wall WART.

If he had known what a network switch was I would have recommended some Ubuquity gear, but in his condition that forum would eat his azz alive.
