 | Surround sound -cable-tv hook up I have a surround sound system a tv and a cable box and I want to hook up the surround sound up so that I can hear the cable tv through my tv speakers. Right now the sound is comming from my tv speakers and is too quiet and we turn up the tv and I am afraid I will blow my speakers. I have a HDMI cable that looks like a USB and I have a Red,white, and yellow cable, and a red and white cable. How do I hook this up so I get the cable sound to come from the surround sound. |

Then you can have sound coming thru your stereo system. If you don't have a setup like that then use the red/white cables from the box to your stereo receiver. |

If this is the case, you will need to choose which audio output you want to use on the box, and plug that into the audio input you wish to use on your receiver. Then you should be able to turn off the TV speaker and get sound through your audio system.
Most receivers I've worked with only have pass-through audio on HDMI, so you're not able to actually get sound from the receiver through the HDMI, and it requires the second audio input. Keep in mind that if you want true surround sound (5.1) from the cable box, you will need to use a digital output, which would either be digital coax or the TOSLink/Optical cable. Your red/white stereo cable will not give you true surround sound, only stereo. -- Dan Della Terza WOW! Internet, Cable & Phone Network Operations Center |

 | reply to carolyme If you have the ultra TV box you have three sound output on the back basic stereo (RCA Jack left/right), digital coax (single RCA Jack), digital optical(special Jack).
First look at your stereo and see what it supports. With some stereos you can plug your HDMI into the stereo and run a second HDMI from the stereo to the TV. (my onkyo has HDMI in/out but does not process audio from it. I had to use another audio connection)
Once you know what options your stereo supports, get the appropriate cable and connect the player to that connection. Digital optical is the best, use Basic stereo as the last resort.
Once you have the stereo connected, turn off the audio on your TV. Then setup your Cable remote to run your stereo.
Without knowing specifics of your TV, stereo the instructions can't be more specific than that. |
