I think this one is an LTS edition, so maybe your post should read 12/22/2012 instead?

Linux Mint 13 is also an LTS (Long Term Support) release and it will be supported until April 2017.

But that's what's on the web page and could be a lie

Seems to be well supported too. Out for less than 24 hours and there are 97 updated packages available

Noice.. That'll be a nice little weekend project for me. Backup and install.. Now I gotta decide whether I should run the Cinnamon edition or the Mate edition. Probably gonna get both and test-drive the new Mate first. I already know I like Cinnamon

Same here looks neat, it's been about two years since I last tried it.

I installed Mint 13 with cinnamon on a separate machine to check out the final version (and possible upgrade to my Linux Mint 11).. one thing I would like is to be able to remote control it and having the nice Cinnamon desktop when connected..

I use NX (NoMachine) for some time now to control Mint 11 - with Mint 13 it works too but I only get the classic desktop.
I tried xrdp installing from the repository and it works as expected but I also get the classic desktop.. xrdp connection seems fast!
You guys know any way to change the config so I can get the Cinnamon like desktop?

Other than that I think this release is a winner, I have not seen any problems so far, I will use it for a few days and decide on when to 'upgrade', definitely looks better and faster...

Thanks!

Is there anything special I have to do to upgrade from 12? I've got 12 on a box of mine and I've never upgraded a linux box before.

I gave Maya-Mate a try and I got no complaints. It's a solid G2 experience, no unpleasant surprises. When you run the installer, you will get a couple of error messages, just dismiss them and it will install just fine.

Because I liked the slickness of Cinnamon while it's still maintaining a very high level of usability on the desktop, I decided to go with Maya-Cinnamon (was running C1.4 under Lisa after a long period of running XFCE on her - G3 with MGSE and some custom extensions was ok, but a bit of a hog). No issues with installing, but there are a couple of warnings to dish out:
1) If you have Broadcom 43-series chipset, you may not be able to load the installer without compatibility mode (right in the boot menu when you boot off the usb). I have b43 and it never gave me this issue.
2) Don't try to edit the panels without updating the installed system first.. Had some dragging issues, but once I ran the updates, it functioned smoothly

Wish-list:
-Native support for having 2 panels on the bottom (currently you have to install an Extension)
-Window snapping to panels and/or being able to set the workspace margins

going to try this now. i'm running mint 11 on my work laptop (corei7, 16gig ddr3, 256gb ssd, ati 6470m). i'm in the process of spinning up a vm of mint13 cinnamon to see if i like it. if i do -- i'll probably end up spending a weekend and moving everything over. i will need to move to something in an lts version anyway to make sure that i will stay updated.

anyone having major stability issues with cinnamon on an ati card with the proprietary blobs?

Mint 13 seems to be a non-starter for me. I'm not 100% certain, but I think the nVidia cards in my 4 & 5 year old Dell desktops are too old to be supported. One won't even boot the live dvd, and the other crashed with a kernel error when I started the install process. I burned the Mate-32 .iso twice from different sources and neither one would work. The only Linux I've ever used is Ubuntu, and was hoping to find something similar that would run on what I have. Now I'm still looking.

I'm no expert, but I highly doubt it's the NV causing the problem.

I've never had a *nix desktop fail in the last decade because I had a NV card, in fact the opposite is usually true, meaning onboard vid, etc.

More likely it's failing on a windows modem or other proprietary Dell hardware. If you give us specific models, I'm sure we can help ya. I have several myself of that vintage.

Not booting could mean it's not setup to boot from CD in the BIOS, you burned a DVD and that drive cant read DVD's, or you burned it at a rate higher than an old drive can handle. I always burn ISO's at 4x for that reason.

Or, the drive can't read burnt discs at all. --
