Governments could build their own "Balkanised web", where people saw different information online depending on who and where they were, without anyone knowing what had been censored. "Make no mistake, this is a fight for the future of the web, and there is no room for complacency," he said."
Isn't Google also guilty of such measures with it's personalized/tailored search results for logged members. Seems what's good for the goose isn't the same for the gander.
With the co-operation at other levels perhaps they want to influence this for some countries. Must be quite the burden not to have dictorial rights to the internet.

Maybe they don't like whats coming. AU:Government to tighten up online privacy rules "This is tightening up that regime and making sure that consumers do have proper information about how their personal details might be used." »www.theage.com.au/technology/tec···3w3.html
They certainly don't like this either;

Up to a point but the motives of Governments, and private entities such as Google, are different.
Many Governments (e.g. China) want to restrict access to information for political reasons. That said they want to track their citizens to see what they're up to.
Google, Facebook etc want to publish/share as much information as they can get a hold of to make money.
Sometimes the two objectives intersect.
I'm sure the US Government security agencies (FBI/CIA/DHS/NSA etc) love Google, Facebook etc as they get a lot of information for free. All they have to do is look and/or monitor.
Pretty soon (if not already) they'll also be watching, via drones (armed or not), citizens as well.
While I'm not a fan of Google/Facebook/etc I'm more worried about Government tracking/monitoring. In the US the 4th Amendment is supposed to prevent "unreasonable searches and seizures" (by the Government). Evidently almost everything is now "reasonable" -- Don't feed trolls--it only makes them grow! |

Re: Governments pose greatest threat to internet: Google Governments do not like that Google is better at harvesting information than they are.
That new NSA data center? odds are it will only give the NSA 1/3rd the capability Google has to harvest information. And they do not like being behind the private sector in technology. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
