[Internet] Latency issue - Birmingham AL

Having an occasional latency issue that I cannot diagnose. It is only related to running a tracert and the PC game Diablo 3.

I am running directly through the Motorolla modem and not a router. Speedtest.com brings back a good report (through a server in Arab, AL?). However, the tracert to any website, it just times out completely.
The game reports a 2k ms latency one day and 150ms the next. I would think it is a game server issue, except no one else is having the problem at the same time.

Would this be a restricted port? Bandwidth restrictions? Throttling? I have never had this problem before, including connecting to other Blizzard servers.

Thanks

Tracerts to a specific server isn't going to help you need pathpings from that server to your IP because that is where the bottleneck is likely to be. Go to blizzard and insist they provide those to you and send them to me. I'll take a look then. And NO it isn't throttling are of that nonsense.

Thanks for the response.

Customer support with Blizzard is swamped right now, so it may take a while to get anything from them. I agree that it sounds like the bottleneck is on the server side, just wanted to make sure.

The tracert question was actually unrelated - I can't run a tracert to anything. All 30 hops just time out.

Pathpings - somewhat familiar with that, can that be run from my end at all?

Yup...

Do this...get yourself a copy of 3Dtracert and run that. See if you get better results.

Well, maybe my local latency was not as good as I thought.

Speedtest.net results:

Download: 15.09 Mb/s
Upload: 1.89 Mb/s
Latency: 65 ms
Rated the connection as a B-

That does not seem typical for living in a major metro area.

The 3Dtraceroute also just timed out on everything.

Which Motorola modem do you have? And that latency to an offset server is normal.

Turn it completely off or uninstall it. I suspect it's doing something it shouldn't be. Instead of using a all in one product install a router, don't use software based firewall and use MSE. You save money and will keep you secure plenty secure. In meantime totally turn that nonsense off, temporarily uninstall it and see if your tracert issue goes away.

Still no success with the trace route.

I compared those numbers to a friend's connection and he was getting 6.8 mb/s up and only a 12 ms ping.
