 | What is Normal? what is the normal or average amount of bandwidth a person should be using and expect to get without any problems. this includes Netflix or using it to stream TV. we have no cable or satellite and only get the over the air channels. I just got clear last Friday and bought a Roku media streaming that night. we are very pleased with what we have seen so far, I was sick and tired of the very limited TV we had to watch. Am I going to run into problems if I stream 3 to 5 hours a day? I have no idea what that equates to as far as band with.
thanks for any insight on this issue.

 | well from doing a quick search and reading a little (I'm in work sitting out back in my truck on the laptop,LOL) it looks like I can expect to be using anywhere from 30 to 40 gigs ,is this going to be problematic with Clear? with out streaming anything I have been using about 6 to 8 gigs a month. with the Roku player it is yet to be determined what I am going to be using. I would guess about 2 to 3 hours a day. what that means as far as bandwidth I have no clue. I will be watching standard definition I know that much. |
|
 | reply to szootman I am basically using this for the same thing. I have a 1 / 1.5 DSL connection for everything else. Standard def is not too bad on the bandwidth and like you i only run a movie or two a day from Netflix. I think Clear may optimize / throttle during video streaming anyways. I have the $50 plan . If i run a speedtest right after streaming a video it gives me a reading of around 1.5 down. Wait about 10 minutes let it idle then redo the speedtest. you will get around anywhere from 4 to 7 or maybe even a 10 meg download speed. This is still good enough for my needs which allows me to separate streaming AWAY from the DSL connection so my streaming does not interfere with family surfing or vice verse. |

 | reply to szootman I know one thing,in my area not that many people have Clear.most people have Comcast or Verizon. people I know, never even heard of Clear. some say Oh I noticed they just opened a kiosk in the mall. but I don't know for sure how their system works as far as what this means as far as traffic on the antenna I am using. could be a good thing and it may make no difference at all if the antenna is a shared type of thing. so far so good. very pleased with the service so far ! |

A lot of the area is on Verizon FiOS OR Cox. Many never heard of clearwire here either. When i went to the mall store in the city two towns over my address did not even show service available. I was told only mobile would possibly work . I chanced it anyhow and get 5 lights on the modem. I think if too many people actually started using this tower congestion could become an issue. What helps is they are interested in wireline services. |

 | reply to szootman yes, I am kind of in the same circumstance, hard wired is a better option and undoubtedly faster but along with that comes a contract and a much higher cost. this is the perfect set up for me. one never knows,I have been given the boot a few times from the women I live with, this one here in particular. I can leave and take it with me and there is no hassle setting it all up in a new place. no address change and no service interruption. I have had it for exactly one week today and have downloaded 22 gigs to date. I check my download speeds regularly and although I get some low readings now and then I have not had any problems.TV and computers work fine. I have Virgin mobile also and there is no comparison. they just sent me an email telling me about a service change next month. they are going to have 4G @ $55 a month Unlimited* (10 gigs allowed) that cracks me up,the unlimited catch word being thrown in there to snare people. that is not unlimited! truthfully it should read "Limited to 10 gigs) ,so much for truth in advertising. I'm planning on letting it run out and keeping it as a back up,I can always shoot down to a hot spot and re-activate it anytime I please with just a couple of clicks.it's good back up! |

 | reply to szootman I found out what normal is. and evidently my normal is something Clear does not like. I am averaging 100 gigs a months and I believe they do not like this. I can barley use this service today. it cuts out everyday and all day. I told the lady ,well if that is the case. I am on the edge of your service, then you see what my complaints are and it is obvious you can not provide the service i am paying for. I laugh, she says "oh,yes. we can provide the service ,but you will have good days and bad days. ! wrong lady. in the last 3 weeks I have had a bad day every day and every night! they are gone and they better not shut it down till the month is up! I am going to ask for my money back for the modem and I know it is highly unlikely that they will do it but I am prepared to argue the point. why should I have to keep it when they do not provide me with the service. worst case i will have them send me a new one and not activate and and sell it on craigslist. These people suck, they even farmed the service part out to India. every time I call I get an Indian so I know they are one of those "greedy anti American" companies who gladly pay less to another family in a foreign country to boost the bonuses of the CEO here. it's a horrible service. |

 | reply to szootman In my experience, if you don't ever actually connect your modem to your computer or network, your service will be ok.
If you must connect it to your computer, I suggest avoiding visiting webpages, as well as any photos, videos, youtube, netflix. -- Satmex 5 | 970 | DirecWay SRS | Ver. 4.0.3.9 DAK403_P8 |

 | I must be in fairy tale land then and what i see is just a figment of my imagination . Mine works as it should and i stream all i want and in HD. |
|
 | Nope, just the right tower and the right location.
Though it says Rosharon, im actually 22 miles from downtown Houston, in other words, every tower here is bombarded with users and simply oversold. -- Satmex 5 | 970 | DirecWay SRS | Ver. 4.0.3.9 DAK403_P8 |

 | reply to norbert26 funny it worked perfect for almost 5 weeks, then "boom" everyday I have the same problem and all day and night. I even taped the modem on a long stick and put it 8' out just so the building would be out of the equation and it is the same. I was streaming 2 TV's pretty much all day ,or at least 1 because my daughter is not working and watches Netflix all day. as soon as I came home I would put mine on plus my desk top, everything was beautiful for 5 weeks. Now I'm lucky to get the modem to connect and when I do ,most times it is not even 3G. 1 TV alone and it cuts out every 5 minutes to buffer some more. well I don't have that problem anymore because I now have Comcast/Earthlink this is consistent and it reads straight across with no peaks and valleys. I'm happy now. I was with Clear but they ended up being an expensive trial. I now have a useless 4G modem. and another thing I would mention is Clear will not be winning any awards for customer service anytime soon. Netflix rates the ISP's and Clear is the bottom of the barrel. I also find it amusing how they have a huge number of complaints at ripoffreport.com and several lawsuits pending for whatever. |
|
 | And also I should mention it is $10 a month cheaper. I could have had Clear for $25 a month but said no! they offered that to me as a last ditch effort. it is not worth the aggravation and when I am on the road I have a virgin USB that I can turn on instantly for $10 or $20 and it covers my needs. in the last month I have only used 15 MB outside the home. |

dellis join:2002-09-22 Des Plaines, IL | I was doubtful when people were saying that they were getting great service while I was getting crappy service. (Throttled after 9am until 1am) And now I can say that is really does matter how many people are on your tower during a certain time. I recently moved to a different town, and the service is a totally different experience. I don't get throttled EVER, and there are days when my wife is on Hulu all day. I also do a lot of remote work for my job, so I'm uploading and download a lot. So far no real problems to report. So it really depends on where you live. |
